Recovering Materiality in Institutional Work

Abstract: This paper focuses on the neglected role of material elements (e.g., objects and spaces) in institutional processes. The work is empirically grounded on the study of two prizes: one aimed at institutionalizing a managerial model in the public sector and the other, a form of patient-centered care in the health services. Grounded on (post-humanist) practice theory, we discuss how materiality participates in the work to support the legitimacy of these approaches. More specifically, we show that material elements … Show more

“…In other words, embodied knowledge based on spatial orientations shapes individual, group and organizational identities, which the literature on institutional maintenance fails to consider The above insights offered by the literature on organizational spaces have great potential to enrich institutional theorizing. Institutional literature has long recognized the role of buildings as carriers of institutions (Jones and Massa, 2013;Scott, 2014;Zucker, 1988), and is beginning to take cognizance of other representations of physical form such as objects (Monteiro & Nicolini, 2014;Orlikowski & Scott, 2008;Pinch, 2008;Raviola and Norbӓck (2013), tools and techniques used in organizations (Lawrence, Leca & Zilber, 2013), and computer technologies (Gawer and Phillips, 2013;Jorges and Czarniawska, 1998;Czarniawska, 2008). However, the literature on institutional maintenance largely confines itself to the study of social relations and fails to take account of the interplay between organizational spaces and emotions that these spaces evoke.…”

“…The role of the building as 'a strong material anchor' (Monteiro & Nicolini, 2014: 4) in maintaining institutions is often recognized, but how this effect is achieved is not well understood. In her article on the creation of the London School of Economics, Czarniawska (2009: 430) commented on the importance of the building as a stabilizing artefact for the institution: 'With the exception of clandestine schools, a school is not a school without a building'.…”

“…In what follows, I develop a relational perspective to expand this line of enquiry. This perspective builds on insights from actor-network theory (ANT), which underpins a great deal of practice-oriented research on objects (Meyer et al 2013;Monteiro and Nicolini 2014). According to this view, 'things' (material and visual artefacts) are important.…”
