Reconstruction of Lost Cultural Heritage Sites and Landscapes: Context of Ancient Objects in Time and Space

Abstract: Diachronic studies play a key role in the research and documentation of cultural heritage and its changes, ranging from architectural fragments to landscape. Regarding the reconstructions of lost cultural heritage sites, the determination of landscape conditions in the reconstructed era goes frequently unheeded. Often, only ruins and detached archeological artefacts remain of the built heritage. Placing them correctly within the reconstructed building complex is of similar importance as placing the lost monume… Show more

“…According to Brůha et al (2020), Clini et al (2017) and Hain and Hajtmanek (2019), VR systems allow museum visitors to interact, navigate, explore virtual reconstructions of lost heritage. Thus, VR is one of the most appealing and interactive technologies to emerge in the museum sector (Lee et al 2020;Mihelj et al 2014) and in virtual museums (Fevgas et al 2014;Guerra et al 2015;Loizides et al 2014;Sylaiou et al 2019).…”

“…Even when different data sources (floor plans, sections, images) are combined, the demolished buildings' reconstruction is still tricky [40,41]. The integration of minor archaeological artefacts and larger entities (buildings and landscape) goes smoothly, sometimes aided by crowdsourced images of lost cultural heritage [42,43]. Due to earlier research, it is possible to derive a 3D model from one photo in free software such as Sketchup [44,45].…”

“…Over the past few years, these new technologies have become essential tools for cultural heritage professionals to analyse, reconstruct, and interpret data. The application of photogrammetric reconstruction ranges from the reconstruction of museum collections [16,17], the documentation of buildings and complexes of buildings [2,18] to the reconstruction of fragments of the historical landscape [19]. Photogrammetric reconstructions are also used in a wide range of architectural modelling work.…”
