Rapid Communication: Postmortem Distribution of Organophosphate Insecticides in Human Autopsy Tissues Following Suicide

Abstract: Organophosphate insecticides (OP) are used widely in Turkey and are the most common agent employed for suicidal poisoning. At present there are limited data available on the distribution of OP in humans, and the aim of the study was to report insecticide concentrations in human autopsy tissues. With the use of gas chromatography-nitrogen phosphorous detector, the levels of fat, liver, and blood OP were determined from 32 suicide victims. In all cases OP were present and usually more than one OP was found. The … Show more

“…Organophosphorus pesticides have been stated to stay in blood circulation for a short time and therefore the blood pesticide levels were stated to be lower than organ levels in a previous study [22]. In accordance, in the present study, the mean level of blood diazinon was 0.4 mg/kg, whereas the same level was 19 mg/kg in the brain, which has the lowest diazinon level among the organs.…”

“…Therefore, it is very important to distinguish these poisonings. Analytical methods have been described for identifying organophosphate and carbamate identification by using LC-MS [11], gas chromatography [12,13], and gas chromatography-MS [14]. For effective toxicological screening, sufficiently rapid sample screening is as important as sufficient method accuracy.…”

“…This fact is explained by the mobilization of OPPs stored in adipose tissue. 40 As breast milk is rich in fat content, it is a suitable fluid for the accumulation and removal of pesticides. However, it is the best and an indispensable food for babies during the initial year of life.…”
