Umbilical disorders, which frequently occur in calves, are among the major causes of economic losses in herds. Antibiotic therapy alone is effective for some infectious cases, but surgical intervention is often indicated. This review aims to provide an overview of the clinical and surgical perspectives of the principal umbilical disorders in calves. The umbilicus may be affected by infectious or non-infectious conditions, including hernia, persistent urachus, omphalitis, urachitis, omphalophlebitis, and omphaloarteritis. Infectious varieties can culminate in sepsis and sometimes even involve other organs. Under these conditions, the chief complaint of calves tends to be apathy and visible swelling in the umbilical region. When surgery is indicated, the veterinary surgeon needs to have a thorough understanding of umbilical disorders, which coupled with careful clinical examination, will enable the formulation of an effective surgical plan. Surgical principles linked to pre-, trans-, and post-operative care must be considered, as recovery depends upon the surgery performed, pathological factors, and the patient's individual response. Some of the most common surgeries performed include herniorrhaphy, urachus, and umbilical vein resection. Several technological resources, such as ultrasonography and laparoscopy, are new tools that can help improve the performance of these procedures.

In this study, it was aimed to evaluate clinical, radiological, ultrasonographic and microbiological findings of calves with septic arthritis. Study material consisted of 50 calves with arthritis in different stocks and gender and aged between 4 to 150 d, brought to the clinic between 2016 and 2017 with lameness complaint. After obtaining medical histories, physical and microbiological examinations of calves' clinical, radiographic, ultrasonographic, synovial samples were conducted. Clinically, monoarthritis was detected in 37 calves and polyarthritis was detected in 13 calves. Most of the lesions were observed in carpal and tarsal joints. In radiography results, increased opacity was found in joints with arthritis, intraarticular narrowing and degeneration on joint surface. In ultrasonographic examinations, the hyperechogenic heterogeneous appearance of synovial fluid and a smooth and apparent hyperechoic joint capsule in articular cartilage surface were observed in 43 cases. Most commonly, Staphylococcus aureus was detected in 13 cases, Trueperella pyogenes was detected in 8 cases, Streptococcus pluranimalium was detected in 8 cases, Mycoplasma bovis was detected in 5 cases, Escherichia coli was detected in 5 cases, Saprophyte spp. was detected in 1 case and Acinetobacter spp. was detected in 1 case in microbiological examination of synovial fluid. In conclusion, the together evaluation of clinical, radiological, ultrasonographic and microbiological findings in the diagnosis of septic arthritis, which is frequently encountered in calves and which causes serious economic losses with high mortality rates, would be a more effective approach for clinical practitioners in terms of treatment and prognosis.

Laboratuvarına septik artrit şüphesi ile gönderilen 153 buzağıya ait sinoviyal sıvı örnekleri bakteriyolojik olarak incelendi. Sinoviyal sıvı örneklerinden kanlı agar, MacConkey agar ve mikoplazma selektif agara ekimler yapıldı ve standart bakteriyolojik metotlarla izolasyon ve identifikasyonları gerçekleştirildi. Sinoviyal sıvı örneklerinin 100'ünde bakteriyel etken izole edilirken, 53 örnekte izolasyon yapılamadı. Örneklerin 30'undan (% 19,6) Mycoplasma sp., 19'undan (% 12,4) Trueperella pyogenes ve 17'sinden (% 11,1) ise Streptococcus sp. tek başına en fazla izole edilen etken oldu. T. pyogenes, Mycoplasma ve Streptococcus türlerinin eşlik ettiği 16 örnekte de miks enfeksiyon saptandı. Diğer patojenler olarak Staphylococcus aureus, koagülaz negatif stafilokok, Escherichia coli, Pasteurella multocida, Mannheimia haemolytica, Proteus sp., Corynebacterium sp., Salmonella sp., Klebsiella sp.ve Citrobacter sp. izole edildi. Sonuç olarak, Burdur ilinde buzağı artritlerinden sorumlu en yaygın etkenlerin Mycoplasma sp., T. pyogenes ve Streptococcus sp. olduğu ve tedavi öncesi sinoviyal sıvılarının bakteriyolojik incelenmesinin faydalı olacağı kanısına varıldı.
