Quantitation and Quality Control of Biodiesel/Petrodiesel (Bn) Blends by Easy Ambient Sonic-Spray Ionization Mass Spectrometry

Abstract: Easy sonic-spray ionization mass spectrometry (EASI–MS) allows for direct and fast MS analysis of samples in ambient conditions with little or no sample preparation, therefore offering unprecedented simplicity, speed, and ease of use. EASI–MS has been shown to access the quality, type, and adulteration of biofuels and vegetable oils. Herein, EASI–MS is shown to quantitate and monitor the quality of soybean biodiesel/petrodiesel (Bn) blends. For adulteration, admixture of the parent oil has been tested and near… Show more

“…11 Moreover, EASI seems well suited for use in portable mass spectrometers. EASI-MS has already been applied successfully to TAG and lipid characterization in many different types of matrices, such as edible 20,21 and inedible vegetable oils, 22 as well as biodiesel, [23][24][25][26][27][28][29] lecithins, 30 meat 31 and mouse livers. 32 However, the application of EASI-MS during quantitative analyses have not been explored extensively.…”

“…32 However, the application of EASI-MS during quantitative analyses have not been explored extensively. 28,29 We tested herein the abilities of EASI-MS during the quantitation of TAG in vegetable oils, as well as in hydrogenated vegetable oils and cocoa butter. The TAG composition obtained via EASI-MS was compared with data obtained via classical approaches: theoretical predictions of the TAG composition, which were performed with a soware projection that uses a mathematical algorithm of the distribution of the FA in the TAG molecule, and direct gas chromatography with a ame ionization detector (GC-FID).…”

“…Quantitation has not being performed here by EASI‐IMS. But we should note that several studies have pointed out that by using spiking internal standard, quantitative information can also be obtained by the direct analysis via ambient techniques including EASI‐IMS . Anyway, legislation for illegal drugs applies regardless of concentration.…”

“…EASI has been successfully applied to quality control and forensics [7,17,20,21]. It also has been also applied to check for the purity of biodiesel [22,23].…”
