“…The distribution of major lipids in mouse and rat brain tissue sections is well established, making rodent brain tissue sections ideal samples for developing novel liquid extraction techniques and other technical advancements in MSI. 22,30,36,41,60,73,104,105,107,125 Lipid distributions in brain tissue sections using both DESI MSI and EASI MSI have been reported in two related studies. 22,30 Both studies concluded that although the acquired ion images showed extreme similarities between the two techniques, higher ion intensity and dynamic range can be achieved using DESI.…”

“…A comparison of the spray spot sizes obtained in DESI and EASI by varying flow rates and solvent compositions was carried out to investigate imaging performance. Although a significant difference in spot size was not found, DESI was comparable with or more sensitive than EASI depending on the targeted analyte . A slow raster speed allows for enhanced extraction of analytes from tissues and minimizes carryovers but the total acquisition time per line increases drastically, while faster raster speeds allow for decreased total imaging time; however, the desorption and ionization efficiency of the analytes can be affected as demonstrated by lower signal intensities.…”

“…DESI-MS method has also proved its potential in many other non-forensic applications such as food control analysis of multiple pesticides on different food surfaces [40], analysis of drugs in wastewater [41], veterinary drugs in feedstuffs [42], lubricant oil additives [43] and clinical diagnostics [21,46]. Research shows great DESI-MS potential in the analysis of lipids, proteins, protein complexes, carbohydrates, and oligonucleotides, specimens from industrial polymers to small organic molecules [44]. Furthermore, the ability to perform spatial in situ imaging of biological samples seems to be particularly useful, especially in case of medical cancer diagnosis [46].…”
