Quality of sleep and use of computers and cell-phones among university students

Abstract: SUMMARY OBJECTIVE Evaluate the quality of sleep and its association with the use of computers and cell-phones among medicine and dentistry students. METHODS Cross-sectional and comparative study, which evaluated 425 students through a socioeconomic questionnaire, the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index(PSQI), and a questionnaire on their use of computers and cell phones. “…La prevalencia de la mala calidad del sueño al inicio del estudio fue de 24,90%, que se evidencia por debajo de población Latinoamericana (18,19,20) , esto posiblemente es debido a que en este estudio se vincularon estudiantes que ingresaron a primer semestre de los programas académicos, teniendo en cuenta que la mayoría aún no experimentaban la vida universitaria, es de esperar que esta prevalencia sea menor; sin embargo, se observó que aumentó la prevalencia de mala calidad del sueño tanto subjetiva como a partir de la clasificación global del cuestionario al final del semestre, cambios que se dieron independientemente del ciclo de formación aunque con mayor magnitud entre los estudiantes de formación profesional, siendo posible que esto suceda por los compromisos de tipo académico a los que se enfrentan en las últimas semanas del semestre. Esta hipótesis está en concordancia con estudios que indican que la permanencia en la educación superior conlleva un aumento de responsabilidades para los estudiantes, lo cual los predispone a una privación del sueño para cumplir con sus compromisos académicos y obligaciones sociales (21,22) , además, la literatura sugiere que los malos hábitos del sueño por lo general incrementan cuando los estudiantes se preparan para los exámenes finales o las fechas límite de los proyectos de cierre de curso (23) .…”
