This study aims to determine the physical and chemical quality of fish oil from the flesh of Pangasius microcinema. The quality of extracted fish oil can be improved through a refining process. Before and after the purification process, the quality of crude fish oil was analyzed, including acid value (AV), saponification value (SV), iodine value (IV), peroxide value (PV), and p-anisidine value (An-V). The results of the characterization of patin fish oil (PFO) in meat were carried out with 3 purifications, namely purification without activated carbon purification treatment with bentonite, the value of susceptibility to acid value, peroxide value, saponification value, iodine value, and p-anisidinee value, which ranged from 1.92-2.64 mg KOH/g, peroxide value 3.76-4.87 meq O2/kg, iodine value 80.46-81.39 g I2/100g, saponification value 189.48-196.75 mg KOH/g, and p-anisidinee value 5.95-8.93 meq/kg. The best refining process is the oil extracted from patin fish oil meat oil and distilled using bentonite from dry rendering because the processed fish oil is good in the standards set by the International Association of Fish Flour Producers, Indonesian Fish Oil Standards, and as food fish oil grades.

Eel fish is a fishery commodity that has important economic worth in an international trade market. Eel fish (Anguilla bicolor bicolor) has a protein, carbohydrate, and fatty acid. The fatty acid composition in eel fish makes it a potential source of fish oil for health supplement applications. The extraction method and the purification process determine the quality of the fish oil produced. Wet rendering, or wet extraction is considered to be the most commonly used fish oil separation process. However, this process must be subjected to additional treatment, namely purification to produce quality fish oil. This study aims to determine the effect of the addition of bentonite on the physicochemical profile of eel. The oil is extracted from all of the body eel fish parts except waste like intestines. The crude fish oil thus obtained is then further processed with bentonite for refining to obtain pure fish oil. The results showed the quality of eel oil in respectively: acid number 1.47±0.02 mg KOH/g fat, iodine number 105.51 ± 0.62 Wijs, saponification number 226.12±3.86 mg KOH/g and peroxide value 11.86±0.0221 mEq O2/kg. There is a change in physicochemical profile after purification using bentonite. The conclusion, was that utilization of bentonite for eel oil extraction using the wet rendering process may increase the quality of fish oil.

“…Also, acid treatment of bentonites has been shown to create mesoporosity depending on the acid concentrations and time of treatment involving major structural changes and partial decomposition of montmorillonite (Zheng et al, 2017). Nadhiro et al, (2018) studied the quality of Sardinella lemuru oil using bentonite as an adsorbent, revealing that the addition of activated bentonite can increase the quality of this oil that is canned Suseno et al, (2014) showed in his research that the combination of different concentrations of natural bentonite followed by centrifugation is an excellent technique for purifying this oil, where the oil bleaching process tends to decrease as the concentration of the adsorbent is decreased and centrifugation speed. The aim of the present study is to characterize the bentonite clays of the Chiqui Gómez bentonite deposit in Cuba (denominated as Cuban bentonite clays in this work) due to the potential of this unexploited deposit, which could be used as adsorbent of shark liver oil impurities.…”

The Cuban bentonite clays have a specific surface area of 79.9098 m2.g-1, a pore volume of about 0.077612 cm3.g-1 and both isotherms exhibited a hysteresis loop of IV type. X-ray diffractogram of raw bentonite shows that the main mineralogical component is montmorillonite (> 90%). The mineral object study presents the first endothermic peak, characteristic of montmorillonite, in 48.11 ºC and others less accentuated (80.81, 94.01, 119.81 ºC) characteristic of calcium montmorillonite, that corresponds to the loss of water, and can be extended up to 250 ºC. The FTIR spectra showed the existence of Si-OH, Al-Al-OH, Al-Fe-OH, Al-Mg-OH and Si-O-Si functional groups in all clay samples, confirmed the presence of hydrated aluminosilicate in the clay, bands between 1120 and 461 cm-1 correspond to phyllosilicate structures and OH stretching vibrations were observed. The pH at the point of zero charge (pHPZC) obtained has a value of 8.1, which allows montmorillonite to be classified as basic. The structural formula for one-layer unit of montmorillonite was determined as (Na3.99Al0.01)(Al1.11Fe3+0.49Mg0.18Ti0.07)(Ca0.24Na0.15K0.01)O10(OH)2, indicate the location of the different cations in metal oxide octahedrons or tetrahedrons, respectively. From the results obtained by different methods and the analysis of the calculated structural formula, it can be concluded that the bentonite under study is a calcium montmorillonite, with a low specific surface area and little porosity.
