Psychometric Properties of Measurement Instruments: Conceptual Basis and Evaluation Methods - Part Ii

Abstract: Objective: to present and discuss conceptual bases and methods for evaluating the content, construct and criterion validity of self-reported measuring instruments. Method: theoretical study based on the concepts of the Consensus-based Standards for the Selection of Health Measurement Instruments and those evaluated in the Evaluating the Measurement of Patient-Reported Outcomes, which includes concepts of instrument assessment to assess patient-reported outcomes. Results: validity is significant for the metho… Show more

“…The HRQoL of patients with PPI was assessed in this study and the domains that obtained the highest scores were Social Functioning and Emotional Well-Being, while Physical Health and Physical Functioning obtained the lowest scores. These results match those reported in both Brazilian 3,17 and international studies. 6 Even though Emotional Well-Being and Emotional Problems domains belong to the Mental Component, we note that in this study, and also in other studies, 3,5,18 the domain Emotional Well-Being is always best evaluated, while Emotional Problems are poorly rated.…”

“…To obtain psychometric evidence, one of the first procedures is that which critically assesses whether the components of the instrument are related to the attributes that need to be measured -i.e., content validation 12 . Concerning this study's content validity, the judges' analysis with the CVI calculation revealed a positive degree of agreement (> 0.8) in most of the items, which proved to accurately reflect the construct that is being measured.…”

“…To develop an instrument, it is important to respect the psychometric properties that aim to ensure the quality and effectiveness of the results with evidence of validation tests. One of the first validation tests is the content-based evidence, which begins transforming abstract concepts into actual measurable indicatorsan essential stage in the process 12 .…”
