Protective effect of taurine against potassium bromate-induced hemoglobin oxidation, oxidative stress, and impairment of antioxidant defense system in blood

Abstract: Potassium bromate (KBrO3 ) is widely used as a food-additive and is a major water disinfection by-product. KBrO3 causes severe toxicity in humans and experimental animals. Bromate is considered a probable human carcinogen and a complete carcinogen in animals. We have investigated the potential role of taurine in protecting against KBrO3 -induced oxidative stress in rat blood. Animals were given taurine for 5 days prior to KBrO3 and then sacrificed. Blood was collected and used to prepare hemolysates and plasma… Show more

“…Increase of free radicals is accompanied with different damages such as oxidation of hemoglobin and this causes anomaly in ability of oxygen carrying (15). Hence, according to role of glutamine in increase of activity of immune cells, it is expected that glutamine can be effective in decrease of oxidation of hemoglobin.Although some studies have referred to increase of Turin level after consumption of glutamine and role of Turin in decrease of oxidative pressure (33). However, it is vital to pay attention to this point that a part of hemoglobin forms a protein that is called '' globin''.…”

“…The expression of Cyp1b1 was transiently increased (up-regulated on day 4 and down-regulated on day 14 after injection of hCB-MSCs). Hbb and Hba , which were highly up-regulated on days 1 and 14 after injection of hCB-MSCs, are involved in oxygen transport from the lung to various peripheral tissues and are expressed in alveolar cells to perform antioxidant functions (Ahmad and Mahmood, 2016; Grek et al, 2011; Huffman et al, 2000; Macari and Lowrey, 2011; Newton et al, 2006). …”
