Protective and therapeutic effects of dexpanthenol on isoproterenol‐induced cardiac damage in rats

Abstract: The purpose of the study was to explore the protective and therapeutic effects of dexpanthenol (DEX) on isoproterenol (ISO)-induced cardiac damage. Forty rats were distributed into four groups: group I (Control); group II (ISO); ISO (150 mg/kg/day) was given to rats once a day for 2 consecutive days with an interval of 24 h; group III (DEX+ISO): DEX (250 mg/kg) was applied 30 min before the first ISO administration and continued in the next two days after second ISO administration; group IV (ISO+DEX): After th… Show more

“…Our findings indicated that hemodynamic parameters such as systolic, diastolic, and mean blood pressures were altered in DC and DC + ISO rats due to the consecutive loss of cell membrane potential in injured myocardium. The results are in line with the previous reports (Ishikawa et al, ; Kalkan et al, ; Mátyás et al, ). Moreover, KF treatment improved systolic, diastolic, and mean blood pressures in DC + ISO rats.…”

“…A handful of studies looked at the effect of this vitamin on cardiac function in animal models inducing cardiac stress. In rats, dexpanthenol, a precursor of pantothenic acid, is beneficial for the heart during sepsis induced by cecal ligation and puncture [ 192 ] and could also protect the heart from isoproterenol-induced cardiac damage [ 193 ]. This protection could rely on the preservation of antioxidant machinery that would maintain a better antioxidant status of the myocardium; a mechanism already suggested to explain the protective effect of dexpanthenol on cardiovascular damage, especially on endothelial dysfunction, in the type 1 diabetes rat model [ 194 ].…”
