Proliferative Activity in Oral Carcinomas Studied with Ag-NOR and Electron Microscopy

Abstract: This study was conducted on 61 patients (27 males and 34 females). The age ranged from 27 to 81 years (mean 54 years). All suffered from oral squamous cell carcinoma and were treated by surgery and deep X-ray therapy (DXT). The UICC and TNM classification and staging recommendations were used for evaluation of the patients. All sections were stained with Ag-NORs stain for examination of the proliferative activity of the squamous cell carcinomas. Biopsies were also taken from another 6 cases--3 cases with norma… Show more

“…En este reporte las regiones se mostraron como varios puntos dentro del núcleo y con un patrón agrupado, lo que responde a una alta actividad proliferativa. En el carcinoma de mama el estudio de AgNOR ha mostrado una estrecha relación con la superviviencia 22 , además en COCE indiferenciados la cantidad de AgNOR se ha asociado con un pronóstico desfavorable 23 .…”

“…Background should be pale yellow and clear, the nucleus yellow and/or brown, and AgNOR sites intra-nucleolar black dots. Most studies have shown that high AgNORs counts can reflect a tumor's degree of malignancy, differentiate among reactive, benign, and malignant conditions (Derenzini & Ploton 1991;Khan et al, 2006;Kummoona et al, 2008;Raikhlin et al, 2006). Crocher & www.intechopen.com McGovern (1988) applied the AgNORs method to normal, cirrhotic, and carcinomatous livers and recognized a significant difference in their AgNORs scores.…”
