Prognostic factors in the sick neonatal foal

Abstract: In the foal, the most common neonatal diseases are responsible for an high non-survival rate. Since intensive care for neonatal foals is usually very expensive an early prognosis for survival at admission or during hospitalization is recommended, as well as a prognosis for future athletic potential. Therefore, prognostic factors for prematurity, septicaemia, other infectious diseases and hospitalized foals are revised and discussed on the base of literature and authors experiences. The advantages and limitatio… Show more

“…Horses are a species characterized by late maturity and large generation gaps, as well as low proliferacy and fertility. This poses important problems in equine breeding practice, when combined with high juvenile mortality rate (Castagnetti and Veronesi 2008). The fact that obtaining a healthy foal is not possible without having a healthy breeding mare, combined with the fact that there has been a steep increase in the number of mares suffering from hyperlipidemia during periparturient period in the recent years (Waitt and Cebra 2009), have motivated the authors of this study to look into the subject of hyperlipidemia in foaling mares in more detail.…”

“…Bei neonatal erkrankten Fohlen wurden verschiedene Parameter untersucht, wobei sich eine Leukopenie oder eine Hyperlaktatämie als wertvolle prognostische Parameter herausgestellt haben (Castagnetti und Veronesi 2008, Corley et al 2005, Gayle et al 1998, Wotman et al 2009 …”
