Profiles of Personal Resiliency for Normative and Clinical Samples of Youth Assessed by the Resiliency Scales for Children and AdolescentsTM

Abstract: Cluster analyses with the three global scores of the Resiliency Scales for Children and Adolescents™ (RSCA) were used to determine personal resiliency profiles within normative (641) and outpatient clinical (285) samples of youth aged 9 to 18 years. Normative and clinical profiles were compared with each other and the clinical profiles were then compared with profiles previously found for an inpatient psychiatric sample. Three profiles were identified for the normative sample indicating high resiliency (31%), … Show more

“…The vulnerability index provides an estimate of the discrepancy between self-perceived resources (the resource index) and risks as measured by the emotional reactivity scale (Prince-Embury, 2007). Past research supports the reliability and validity of the vulnerability index, which has been shown to discriminate between clinical and nonclinical samples (Prince-Embury, 2007, 2008Prince-Embury & Courville, 2008;Prince-Embury & Steer, 2010;Saklofske et al, 2013). Because the focus of the present study was on the global construct of personal resiliency as a whole, opposed to its individual components, the reverse-keyed vulnerability index was used to measure personal resiliency in all analyses (i.e., higher scores indicate higher level of overall personal resiliency).…”

“…The RSCA is a screener, but can also be utilized to plan and monitor progress and outcomes. The scales are available only in a self-report format and can be administered by quali fi ed supervisors who are professionals, knowledgeable of psychological tests and assessments (Prince-Embury & Steer, 2010 ) . The RSCA can be used to evaluate children and adolescents' personal resiliency.…”
