Purpose:The purpose of this study was to identify the social network types of elders and to identify differences among latent classes by social network. Methods: The data of 312 elders used in this study were collected from health, welfare, and other facilities and from elders living in the community. The interviews were conducted from July 16 to September 30, 2007 using a standard, structured questionnaire. Descriptive statistics, one way ANOVA with the SPSS 15.0 program and latent class analysis using Maximum Likelihood Latent Structure Analysis (MLLSA) program were used to analyze the data. Results: Using latent class analysis, social network types among older adults were identified as diverse for 58.0% of the sample, as family for 34.0%, and as isolated for 8.0%. The health status of respondents differed significantly by network type. Elders in diverse networks had significantly higher health status and elders in isolated networks had significantly lower physical health status on average than those in all other networks. Conclusion: The results of this study suggest that these network types have important practical implications for health status of elders. Social service programs should focus on different groups based on social network type and promote social support and social integration.

Relationships with neighbors are considered exchange relationships, in which the continuation of exchanges depends on balance in previous exchanges. Our study tested whether this is the case. An exchange relationship implies that neighbor relationships are isolated units. We expected, however, that neighborhood integration also affects the continuation of exchange among neighbors. Data were from a longitudinal study among 1,692 independently living Dutch adults of ages 55 to 85 years at baseline and their 7,415 relationships with proximate network members. At a four-year follow-up, both perceived balance and neighborhood integration at baseline increased the chance of instrumental support exchange occurring. We concluded that it is too limited to view relationships between neighbors as exchange relationships, as these relationships are embedded in larger communities, where such communities exist.

Cet article met en relief les implications sociales de l’amitié à l’intérieur des sociétés développées. L’auteure commence par exposer la vision prédominante de l’amitié moderne, relation personnelle, volontaire et privée. Elle explore sommairement les développements et les modèles de cette vision dans le temps et dans l’espace, en critique les bases et en fait ressortir les manques. Dans un deuxième temps, elle met l’accent sur les rapports entre l’amitié et la dynamique sociale. Un survol des études réalisées en Espagne sur ce sujet permet de réinsérer l’interaction amicale dans les processus sociaux plus larges, et fait ressortir les effets de ce type de relation au plan collectif.This article highlights the social implications of friendship in the context of developed societies. The author initially discusses the predominant view of modern friendship as a personal relationship that is voluntary and private. She briefly examines the development and models associated with this view in time and space, criticizing its foundations and noting its shortcomings. She goes on to emphasize the relations between friendship and the social dynamic. An overview of Spanish studies on this topic then serves to reintegrate friendly interaction within broader social processes, and to accentuate the effects of this type of relationship at the collective level.Este artículo hace resaltar las implicaciones sociales de la amistad en el seno de las sociedades desarrolladas. En un primer tiempo se expone la visión predominante de la amistad moderna, que la define como una relación personal, voluntaria y privada; de modo esquemático, se exploran su desarrollo y sus modelos a lo largo del tiempo y del espacio, y se ahonda críticamente en las bases sobre las que se sustenta. La presentación de las carencias de que adolece tal perspectiva sirve de inicio al segundo tiempo, en el que se destaca la íntima relación existente entre la amistad y la dinámica social. Una visión sumaria de los estudios realizados en España sobre el tema ayuda a reinsertar la interacción de amistad en los procesos sociales más amplios, y pone en relieve las implicaciones que tiene este tipo de relación a nivel colectivo
