SUMMARYThis article takes us to Nazaret, an outlying district on Valencia's waterfront which we consider from three complementary perspectives: the synchronic vision of its current socio-spatial structure, the diachronic and processual contextualization of the changes it has undergone in the last century, and the perceptions and images which characterize the neighbourhood, together with the features, activity and incidence of its associative fabric. The analysis focuses on the behaviour of a set of interconnected factors, including the impact of the port and urban development policy, its socioeconomic make-up, the consistency of its associative fabric and its relations with government. Whereas the first three have promoted the spread of social vulnerability and precariousness, propelling the neighbourhood towards marginalization and exclusion, the latter, led by the ongoing dynamism of its residents' association and its confrontation with the local council, is counteracting the negative effects on the neighbourhood, helping to stop a marginalized neighbourhood from becoming a marginal one.
ABSTRACT. The revolutionary left and the transition: dynamics and processesThe aim of this article is to present, in rough outlines, the relationship between the Spanish revolutionary left and the transition process in Spain, and their mutual impact on each other. Moreover, we also address, in a synthetic way, the stages of formation, boom, and decline in the various radical forces. These clusters shared ideologies, expectations, and political cultures, as well as approaches, proposals, and forms of operation, with their homonymous European counterparts. They shared a common background upon which the dictatorship and experience in the Spanish context also left a mark, and this strongly determined the forms of action and the organisational structure of several groups which considered the anti-Francoist fight a synonym for the revolutionary fight. Their evolutionary cycle was, as a whole, linked to the ups and downs of political change during the Franco regime, and in its crisis they represented a crucial motor for social agitation and mobilisation. The rise of democracy in Spain is still developing, albeit in parallel to the decline of these collectives. After successive electoral failures and their conversion into the extra-parliamentary left, these various groups have gone into a rapid process of descent in which widespread weakening, fusions, sectarianism, and dissolution are combined in all their possible forms. Keywords: revolutionary left, Spanish transition, democratic breakdown, social mobilisation.
In today's societies relationships between near relatives and friends appear to be somewhat paradoxical. Some accounts present them as the social ideal, exalting the solidarity and altruism represented by proximal relationships. By contrast, others point to the social dangers in such relationships when they are conducted in the public sphere. In order to grasp the coexistence of these opposite views, this article attempts to place proximal relationships in the explanatory context of a gift economy, a concept with a long history in anthropology and which has lately been the focus of interest of a significant group of social thinkers.
Abstract: This article deals with a stream of Spanish feminism whose origins and developments are linked to the ups and downs of a Spanish revolutionary leftist party, the Communist Movement, and the network organizations which followed it. It's a singular feminism which combines persistent praxis with powerful thinking, as powerful as the women who have led it over forty years; a feminism that combines also the tasks of disseminating its actions and thoughts, together with a resolute action within the Spanish feminist movement. From this perspective, the research focuses on four consecutive aspects followed by some brief conclusions: i) the developments until the 1 josepa.cuco@uv.es
