Prevalence of Tyrophagus putrescentiae Hypersensitivity in Subjects over 70 Years of Age in a Veterans’ Nursing Home in Taiwan

Abstract: Background: Domestic mites are present in house dust samples throughout the world. Reports have shown a high prevalence of Tyrophagus putrescentiae (Tp) sensitization in Europe and Asia, and its importance and clinical relevance in elderly subjects have grown rapidly. The main objective of this study was to investigate the prevalence of Tp sensitization in elderly subjects in a veterans’ nursing home using mite allergen extracts and recombinant allergens. Methods: A total of 199 subjects were enrolled in this … Show more

“…Fifty-two percent of adult individuals over the age of 50 are sensitive to Tp, which is much more prevelent than Dp sensitization in the same age group (22%). Similar findings have been reported in Korea [29]. …”

“…The results showed that, among the 63 elderly subjects, 50 (79.3%) had COPD. Among the 50 subjects with COPD, 38.0% (19/50) were Tp-sensitive subjects and 14.0% (7/50) were Dp-sensitive subjects [29]. All of the Dp-sensitive subjects were also Tp-sensitive.…”

“…In our previous study, we had investigated the relationship between T. putrescentiae and D. pteronyssinus allergy in allergic rhinitis individuals by using skin prick tests, basophil histamine release assays in vitro and specific IgE measurements [ 18 ]. The reactivity between T. putrescentiae and D. pteronyssinus was investigated and results showed that the major cross-reacting allergen was Group 2 allergens and species-specific allergen was Group 3 allergens [ 27 ].…”

“…The IgE responsiveness against mite crude extracts in sera of allergic patients was determined by an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) as previously described [ 27 ]. Briefly, the mite crude extracts used were coated separately onto wells of polyvinyl microtiter plates (Costar, Cambridge, MA, USA) by the addition of 100 μL of a 5-μg/mL solution of crude extract in coating buffer 0.1-mol/L NaHCO 3 , pH 8.4 for 4 h at RT.…”

“…Infestation levels of both house dust mites (Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus (Dp) and Dermatophagoides farinae) and storage mites (Blomia tropicalis and Tyrophagus putrescentiae (Tp)) have been shown to be high in houses around the world (4-6). These mites have been reported to be clinically important (7)(8)(9), and it has been demonstrated that both mites can concurrently sensitize patients (10,11).…”
