Purpose To investigate the family support, anxiety, depression, health-related quality of life (HRQoL), and their associations among parents and grandparents of children with disabilities. Methods This is a cross-sectional study and a total of 327 family caregivers were included. Chi-square test, Mann–Whitney U -test, and two independent t -test were used to identify the intergenerational differences in sociodemographic characteristics, received family support, anxiety, depression, and HRQoL. Eight generalized linear models were developed to examine the associations in both generations. Results Parents and grandparents were most in need of rehabilitation and financial support, but both populations received the least amount of financial support. 33.6% and 36.1% of family caregivers had the risk of anxiety and depression and found no significant intergenerational differences. As for HRQoL, intergenerational differences were found in the physical component score, but not found in the mental component score. Among parents, childcare support of respite care and household tasks assistance was negatively associated with their depression ( p <0.05), professional support of appropriate surgery for children ( p <0.05) and psychological support from professional psychologists ( p <0.01) were negatively associated with their anxiety and depression, psychological support from relatives and friends was negatively associated with their depression ( p <0.05) whereas was positively associated with their mental HRQoL ( p <0.01). As for grandparents, financial support for daily living expenses was negatively associated with depression ( p <0.05), and psychological support from families was negatively associated with depression ( p <0.05) whereas was positively associated with mental HRQoL ( p <0.05). However, no relationship was found between family support and anxiety among grandparents. Notably, no association was found between family support and physical HRQoL among both populations. Conclusion Both parents and grandparents had high risks of anxiety, depression and low levels of mental HRQoL. To efficiently improve psychological health, care providers and policymakers may consider intergenerational differences and provide targeted family support.

Background: Raising a child with Neurodevelopmental disorders (NDDs) can be difficult because it affects the sociality of the parents and their relationships and requires parents to have another set of skills to deal with their child. Hence, the risk of depression and anxiety will increase. Methodology: This study is a prospective, qualitative, cross-sectional, anonymous questionnaire-based study, in which four hundred and sixteen parents of children with (NDDs) in Saudi Arabia participated. The sample size was determined using the Richard Geiger equation with a margin error of 5%, a confidence level of 95%, and 50% for response distribution. The screening was done using a validated Arabic version of Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) and Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7 (GAD-7) which disturbed into Saudi neurodevelopmental disorders related associations and clinics, and psychiatric clinics. The data were collected, reviewed, and then fed to Statistical Package for Social Sciences version 21 (SPSS: An IBM Company). Results: Our study demonstrated that (85.1%) of parents of children with (NDDs) have depression and (85.5%) have anxiety, with no significant difference between mothers and fathers in rates of depression and anxiety. Furthermore, no significant difference was measured between the type of (NDDs) and rates of depression and anxiety in parents. Conclusion: Children with (NDDs) affect their parent’s mental health in terms of increasing rates of depression and anxiety. The increase is not correlated with specific etiology. To combat this phenomenon, increasing efforts must be placed to combat this issue.

Objective: The aims of this study were to assess the demographic characteristics and functional status of children with cerebral palsy (CP) and to evaluate the psychological status of their mothers.Results: A total of 101 patients were included in the study (%57,4% boys, %42,6% girls). Their mean age was 6,79±4,48 (1,5-18) years. Mothers’ mean age was 33,31±7,72 (20-53) years. The neurologic classification were as follows: diplegia 27,7%, tetraplegia 45,5%, hemiplegia 19,8%, dyskinetic or ataxic 6,9%. The GMFCS levels were as follows: level 1 11,9%, level 2 14,9%, level 3 17,8%, level 4 25.7%, level 5 29,7%. SCL-90-R outcomes were as follows: 38,6% somatization, 18,8% anxiety, 37,6% obsessive-compulsive, 36,6% depression, 32,7% interpersonal-sensitivity, 21,8% eating-sleeping disorder. We didn’t detect any significant correlation between the GMFCS levels of children and mothers’ physicological status. Childrens’ low WeeFIM scores were related with anxiety, obsessive-compulsive, depression, interpersonalsensitivity, paranoid ideation and eating-sleeping disorder. (p=0,009, p=0,017, p=0,009, P=0,0001, p=0,021, p=0,001 respectively). The presence of chronic disease was related with somatization, anxiety and depression (p=0,001, p=0,024, p=0,008 respectively). The presence of pain was related with somatization (p=0,0001).Conclusion: Lower WeeFIM scores of children with CP and chronic disease and pain presence in their mothers were detected as the factors that negatively affect psychological status of mothers.International Journal of Human and Health Sciences Vol. 06 No. 01 January’22 Page: 17-23
