Prevalence of contagious caprine pleuro-pneumonia in pastoral flocks of goats in the Rift Valley region of Kenya

Abstract: A cross-sectional survey was conducted between the months of March 2014 and March 2015 to determine the prevalence of contagious caprine pleuropneumonia in goat populations in pastoral flocks in three sub-counties of the Rift Valley region. A total of 432 serum samples were collected from goats from 54 flocks and tested for the presence of antibodies against mycoplasma capricolum subspecies capripneumoniae (mccp) using monoclonal antibody-based competitive enzyme-linked immuno-sorbent assay. Sero-prevalence re… Show more

“…In addition, the odds ratio (OR) of seropositivity revealed that adult and female goats were showing antibodies against CCPP more than young and male goats, respectively. This finding agrees with the reports by Hadush et al [16] and Kipronoh et al [42]. Both age groups and sexes of goats have been reported to be susceptible although higher mortalities have been documented among young animals than adults [29, 43].…”

“…In 2015, the PPR seroprevalence in Turkana was estimated at 40% and 32% in goats and sheep, respectively (Kihu et al 2015b). Similarly, the CCPP seroprevalence was recorded at 63.9% in Turkana West subcounty (Kipronoh et al 2016). More recent estimates of relative prevalence are 17% and 13.3% for CCPP and PPR, respectively (Veterinary Services 2019).…”

“…The large majority of the population practises pastoralism. Goats are the main species and play an important role in the rural households livelihoods and social life (Kipronoh et al, ). The flock monitoring survey was implemented from November 2012 to the end of October 2013 in Turkana East and South Districts.…”

“…Contagious caprine pleuropneumonia is endemic in the Rift valley region with a sero‐prevalence ranging from 63.9% in Turkana West and 29.2% in East Pokot (Kipronoh et al, ). The disease is considered by the pastoralists as the most frequent disease affecting their flocks with a reported incidence of 25% and a case fatality rate of 62.5% (with 10th and 90th percentiles of 25 and 100%) (Bett et al, ).…”
