Economic impact of contagious caprine pleuropneumonia and cost–benefit analysis of the vaccination programmes based on a one‐year continuous monitoring of flocks in the arid and semi‐arid lands of Kenya

Abstract: In Kenya and East Africa, contagious caprine pleuropneumonia (CCPP) is one of the most prevalent infectious diseases affecting small ruminants in pastoral areas with adverse consequences on livelihoods. This is so despite the implementation of bi‐annual vaccination campaigns. Unfortunately, the impact of the disease and the cost‐effectiveness of its prevention and control in a pastoral context have been difficult to assess due to a lack of reliable data. The dynamic of flock population, high illiteracy and lim… Show more

“…More recent estimates of relative prevalence are 17% and 13.3% for CCPP and PPR, respectively (Veterinary Services 2019). A study in 2019 found the average annual economic loss due to CCPP for a standard flock of 100 goats in Turkana was 1712.66 euros, equivalent to 1,932.99 USD (Renault et al 2019). These and other endemic livestock diseases, such as helminths, haemorrhagic septicaemia, and tick-borne infections, threaten pastoral livelihoods in Turkana.…”

“…The choice of any strategy is based on the estimation of the cost–benefit ratio (e.g. Renault et al., 2019; Souley Kouato et al., 2018). Indeed, to be able to quantify the cost (in monetary terms), one needs the estimation of the true prevalence of IDV.…”

“…One study assessed the profitability of vaccination against CCPP infection in goats at different levels of vaccine efficacy [72]. BCR at 20% vaccine efficacy was 5.7, 50% was 27.2 and 95% was 61.9.…”
