Prevalence and epidemiological and histopathological features of canine cutaneous mast cell tumours in Uberlândia, Brazil

Abstract: This study aimed to perform a retrospective survey of canine cutaneous mast cell tumours at the Veterinary Hospital of the Federal University of Uberlândia, as well as to gather epidemiological data, such as breed, age, sex, and location. We also sought to histopathologically classify and characterize the mast cell tumours. Mast cell tumour was the most common neoplasm, accounting for 16.78% of skin neoplasms. In terms of the epidemiological data, the mast cell tumours did not show sexual predilection. Animals… Show more

“…According to Merlo et al (31), the critical period to cancer onset in dogs is 6 to 10 years old. This suggests that older ages predispose dogs to develop neoplasms, this was also reported by many authors Kaldrymidou et al; Costa et al; Hargis et al (18,30,32). However, in the present study, only two cases were reported in dogs less than one year of age.…”

“…Analisou-se a relação entre a idade dos animais acometidos por mastocitomas e a graduação dos tumores e foi possível observar que animais acima de 6 anos apresentaram maior número de tumores Grau III (Quadro 2). De Carvalho et al (2017) relatam que a classificação histológica é dependente da idade, sendo que os cães idosos têm 8 vezes mais chances de terem tumores classificados em alto grau.…”
