Preparation and Microstructural Characterization of Griseofulvin Microemulsions Using Different Experimental Methods: SAXS and DSC

Abstract: Purpose: The objective of the present study is to formulate and evaluate a new microemulsion (ME) for topical delivery of griseofulvin. Methods: The solubilities of griseofulvin in different combinations of surfactant to co-surfactant (S/Co ratio) were determined. Accordingly, based on their phase diagrams, eight microemulsions were formulated and then evaluated with respect to their particle size, surface tension, viscosity, conductivity, zeta potential and stability. Their release behavior, Scanning Electro… Show more

“…As the main goal of the present study was to manufacture SLNs with a better stability, high entrapment efficiency, smaller particles and a narrow sized distribution, different HLB values (between 8 and 16) in the system were produced by using different proportion of binary mixtures of two surfactants with two different HLBs, in order to find the optimum values of HLB that can fulfill the above mentioned requirements such as size, PDI, EE % and zeta potential. Higher EE % may be as a result of the high solubility of naproxen in span 80 [33]. In order to decrease the HLB value of the system, the amount of Span 80 (the surfactant with low HLB) should increase, therefore span 80 helps to load naproxen into the solid lipid.…”

“…Normally, MEs are thermodynamically stable; however, their microstructure is continuously changing in the bicontinuous region. 47 Stability is tested according to International Council for Harmonisation of Technical Requirements for Pharmaceuticals for Human Use (ICH) guidelines, 48 which propose to store MEs in different temperature conditions (4°C, 25°C, and 37°C and 75% -5% Relative humidity [RH]) and time frame. As follows, MEs are inspected for any physicochemical differentiation, including phase separation, drug entrapment, precipitation, and particle size changes.…”
