Preparation and characterization of novel antibacterial castor oil-based polyurethane membranes for wound dressing application

Abstract: Preparation of novel antibacterial and cytocompatible polyurethane membranes as occlusive dressing, which can provide moist and sterile environment over mild exudative wounds is considered in this work. In this regard, an epoxy-terminated polyurethane (EPU) prepolymer based on castor oil and glycidyltriethylammonium chloride (GTEAC) as a reactive bactericidal agent were synthesized. Polyurethane membranes were prepared through cocuring of EPU and different content of GTEAC with 1,4-butane diamine. The physical… Show more

“…As well, maintaining flexibility and strength 25 during healing period is a crucial property for ideal dressing membranes. 4 To find insight regarding these important issues, tensile properties (tensile strength, modulus, and elongation at beak) of dressings were evaluated from their stress-strain curves recorded on both dry and fully hydrated samples (Fig.9a,b and 30 Table 3). “…Meanwhile, non-adherence to wound bed and prevention from bacterial/fungal infection of 45 damaged tissues are two key features of versatile modern wound dressings. 4 To prepare wound dressings having the most of aforementioned features, selection of materials used for the preparation of dressings and mode of their fabrication have prime importance. 50 Polyurethane framework was selected in the present study as the basic ingredient of target dressings.…”

“…Castor oil polymer induces bone formation with high matrix metalloproteinase-2 expression (Saran et al 2014). It has antiinflammatory (Vieira et al 2000) wound healing (Yari et al 2014) and laxative (Apu et al 2013) efficacies.…”

“…It was reported that high concentration of positively charged groups in polymers resulted in cytotoxic effect [53][54][55]. However, it is also well recognized that low concentration of charged QAS incorporated in polymers can be helpful for improving the material biocompatibility and rendered them to be safer for clinical applications [56,57,34,58].…”
