Premature: growth and its relation to oral skills

Abstract: OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the influence of oral motor skills of premature infants on their oral feeding performance and growth, during neonatal hospitalization.METHODS: Fifty-one newborns hospitalized in the neonatal intensive care unit of a hospital in Southern Brazil, between July 2012 and March 2013, were evaluated. The evaluation of oral feeding skills, according to Lau and Smith, was applied after prescription for starting oral feeding. The oral feeding performance was analyzed using the following variables:… Show more

“…The findings with the studied population at risk showed what has been treated by the specialized literature in the area, which points out that oral sensorimotor stimulation, performed by a qualified professional (28,29) , it is a positive measure for the development of risky NB, improving SSB coordination, accelerating the alimentary transition from enteral tube to OD, favoring early weight gain and breastfeeding (30) .…”

“…Association between the improvement in the readiness score for oral feeding and corrected gestational age Figure 2. Association between the improvement in the readiness score for commencement of oral feeding and the transition time from the gastric tube feeding to the total oral feeding was a higher occurrence of PTNBs classified as level 4 (most mature), when compared to previous studies, which presented a frequency between 16% and 31% of the sample population at this level (10,26,28) . This fact can be explained by the fact that the study sample of this study had a larger CGA (30-36 weeks) than that identified in the other studies (28-36 weeks) (10,26,28) .…”

“…In the present study, regarding the performance of oral feeding, the OT average was 27.7%; nine PTNBs presented TR ≥1.5 ml and seven obtained PRO ≥30%. Some studies have used similar parameters for OF performance evaluation (10,20,25,26,27) . One study published results with a significant increase in OT and TR, within the SG and the CG, from the introduction of OF to the first successful OF (p≤0,03) (25) .…”

“…Sensory-motor-oral stimulation has been analyzed in the literature as a positive measure for the development of premature newborns, in order to improve the coordination of sucking, swallowing and breathing, to accelerate the food transition from probe to oral feeding, reduce hospitalization time and encourage early weight gain and breastfeeding (15) .…”
