Predictors of academic success in first semester baccalaureate nursing students

Abstract: Recently the number of students graduating from nursing programs has been insufficient to replace nurses leaving the workforce. The attrition rate for students entering baccalaureate nursing education programs is approximately 30%, with most (82.3%), leaving in their first semester of study (Morgan, 2001). Schools of nursing need to establish ways to decrease student attrition from programs. This study was an attempt to determine whether self-esteem, self-efficacy, and environmental variables are predictors of… Show more

“…In 2009, the attrition rate among nursing students in the United States was as high as 30%. The United States as well as Jamaica and Australia reported high attrition rates that have been reduced successfully through various initiatives (Cook 2010 :17; Peterson 2009 :411; Stott 2007 :326; Wilson 2010 :para.1). Initiatives found to be successful were financial assistance through student loans, scholarships and academic assistance (Cook 2010 :135; Wilson 2010 :para.7).…”

“…According to Porter & Porter (1991), nurses develop a more positive self‐image through career advancement and advanced education, but it remains unclear if this necessarily includes academic training. Self‐esteem had no significant relationship to academic success among 66 first‐semester baccalaureate nursing students (Peterson 2009). Results of a mixed‐method study by Randle (2003) showed that the global self‐esteem among nursing students decreased dramatically between the start and end of a pre‐registration diploma in a higher education programme.…”
