Practical evaluation of on-demand smallcell ON/OFF based on traffic model for 5G cellular networks

Abstract: 5G communication networks will bring enhanced mobile broadband services to users and vertical markets supporting very wide range requirements from context-dependent applications. To support such applications in 5G, not only the conventional area traffic capacity but network energy efficiency is also a critical factor since energy consumption of information processing is also becoming an economic issue for operators. Dealing with this problem, our project considers a C-RAN based cloud cooperated HetNet architec… Show more

“…The measured downlink traffic in 2014 in an area of 4 squared kilometers [27] in the periphery of a metropolitan train station in central Tokyo are visualized in Figures 1 and 2. In this measurement, the average traffic demand per user was about 62 kbps and total area traffic at peak hour was 44 Mbps.…”

“…The second demonstration of PoC was the ability to control and optimize the operation of the network resources in terms of energy efficiency by using the developed multi-RAT CP [71,72]. The centralized RAN (C-RAN), which is LTE eNB in this case, processes context information on its mmWave small cell base stations, including the number of connected user devices and their traffic demand.…”

“…It is also clear that the performance of energy efficiency maximization (purple line) in the 60-GHz band has much better performance in terms of energy efficiency compared to that of system rate maximization (yellow line) in 60 GHz without the control of small cell on/off. In this demonstration, we just showed a snapshot of “Small Cell On/Off”; however, the details of optimization algorithm and simulation results can be seen in [71,72]. …”
