Povidone-Iodine in Antisepsis – State of the Art

Abstract: The natural element iodine has been used for more than 150 years to prevent infection and treat wounds. Yet only due to the development of iodophors has it become possible to use this highly efficient microbicide in a wide range of medical applications. The antimicrobial spectrum is universal. Its efficiency against clinically and epidemiologically significant new pathogens, such as mefhicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus and Enterυcoccus sp. has also been validated. No development of resistance has been d… Show more

“…It inhibits protein synthesis by oxidizing the thiol group. 7 Chlorhexidene is a cationic biguanide that binds to the negatively charged surface of bacterial cell wall leading to alteration in permeability, which leads to leakage of cytoplasmic contents and finally cell death. 8 The literature on efficacy of these agents is conflicting.…”

“…Povidone-iodine has been seen to have a very wide spectrum of action including bacteria, fungi, viruses and protozoa [14] and as yet no reports of resistance acquired against it have appeared in the literature. In our study 1% povidone-iodine was effective against a very wide spectrum of bacteria and fungi.…”

“…Гото-ва лікарська форма цього препарату (1-10% роз-чин, або 1000-10000 мкг/мл) навіть у межах стан-дартних відхилень у чутливості окремих штамів містить достатню концентрацію препарату для за-безпечення згубної дії на будь-якого представника. Слід зазначити, що до йодофорів стійкість не роз-вивається [6].…”
