ABSTRACT:The aim of this study was to evaluate the phytotoxic activity of aqueous extracts from mature leaves, stem bark and roots of Drimys brasiliensis Miers on germination and initial seedling development of two target species, Triticum aestivum L. (wheat) and Raphanus sativus L. (radish). The aqueous extract was prepared in a proportion of 10 g of plant powder, dissolved in 100 mL of distilled water, resulting in a 10% extract concentrate. Dilutions were made with distilled water to 7.5; 5.0; 2.5% and 0% (control). Germination and seedling growth bioassays were carried out under controlled laboratory conditions. The different plant parts exerted inhibitory effects on germination and early growth of wheat and radish, however, the extract obtained from the leaves was more effective in inhibiting the germination of radish. All plant parts of D. brasiliensis may constitute a promising source in the search for compounds capable of acting as natural phytotoxins.

Resumo: A alelopatia pode ser definida como o efeito inibitório ou estimulatório que uma planta exerce sobre a outra por meio da liberação de compostos químicos no ambiente. Diversas espécies do gênero Solanum apresentam propriedades alelopáticas e medicinais. A Solanum paniculatum L. (jurubeba) é uma espécie nativa do Brasil utilizada na medicina popular. O presente estudo objetivou avaliar a atividade alelopática de extratos aquosos de raízes de S. paniculatum na germinação e no crescimento inicial de alface. Os extratos foram preparados sob a forma de decocção e maceração nas concentrações 0, 3, 6, 12, 25, 50 e 100 mg mL-1. Como tratamento controle, foi utilizada água destilada. O delineamento experimental foi inteiramente casualizado, organizado em esquema fatorial 2 x 7, sendo 2 tipos de extratos (decocto e macerado) e 7 concentrações, com 4 repetições de 50 sementes de alface por concentração. Foram avaliadas as seguintes variáveis: índice de velocidade de germinação (IVG), primeira contagem (PC), porcentagem de germinação (PG), comprimento da parte aérea (CPA) e comprimento da parte radicular (CPR). Observou-se que os extratos influenciaram em todas as variáveis, sendo que, no macerado, houve uma maior redução do IVG, da PC, da PG e do CPR. O extrato macerado apresentou maior atividade alelopática quando comparado ao decocto. Em ambos, na concentração de 100 mg mL-1 , foram registradas maiores inibições do CPA e do CPR, não havendo crescimento das plântulas de alface. Conclui-se que extratos aquosos de raízes de S. paniculatum possuem efeito alelopático inibitório sobre a germinação e o crescimento inicial de alface. Palavras-chave: jurubeba; decocção; maceração. Several species of the genus Solanum present allelopathic and medicinal properties. Solanum paniculatum L, (jurubeba) is a native species from Brazil, used in traditional medicine. The present study aimed to evaluate the allelopathic activity of aqueous extracts of S. paniculatum's roots on germination and initial growth of lettuce. The extracts were prepared by decoction and maceration at concentrations: 0, 3; 6; 12; 25; 50 and 100 mg mL-1. As control treatment distilled water was used. The experiment was completely randomized in a 2 x 7 factorial design, with two types of extracts (decoction and maceration) and seven concentrations, being four repetitions of 50 lettuce seeds per concentration. ABSTRACT:Medicinal plants with essential oils in their composition havetypicallybeen shown to be promising in plant control. Sage (Salvia officinalis L.) is cited for its allelopathic effects. This study evaluated the allelopathic potential of dried sage leaves in vegetation, soil and the development of Lycopersicon esculentum Mill. (tomato), Panicum maximum Jacq. (guinea grass) and Salvia hispanica L. (chia) plants. Three seedlings were transplanted seven days after germination in 1 kg plastic containers with soil, in a greenhouse. The grinded dry mass of sage was placed at rates of 3.75; 7.5 15 t ha -1 , and a control (no mass). After 30 days, the chlorophyll index of tomato and guinea grass plants were inhibited with 7.5 and 15 t ha -1 sage cover crops. Tomato shoot length was inhibited in all tested rates, and guinea grass plants showed some reduction in growth when using the highest rate of sage mass (15 t ha -1 ). The dry mass of tomato and guinea grass plants was reduced when using the15 t ha -1 , and 7.5 and 15 t ha -1 of sage cover crops, respectively. It can be concluded that there was some effect of sage coverage on the soil in tomato and guinea grass, but no effect was observed on chia plants.Key words: allelopathic potential, plant growth, sage. RESUMO: Cobertura de Salvia officinalis L. no desenvolvimento de plantas. As plantas medicinais que apresentam óleos essenciais em sua composição normalmente têm se mostrado promissoras no controle de plantas. A sálvia (Salvia officinalis L.) é citada por seus efeitos alelopáticos. Assim, esse estudo avaliou o potencial alelopático das folhas secas de sálvia na cobertura vegetal, no solo, sobre o desenvolvimento das plantas de Lycopersicon esculentum Mill. (tomate), Panicum maximum Jacq. (capim mombaça) e Salvia hispanica L. (chia). Três plântulas foram transplantadas, sete dias após germinação, em vasos plásticos de 1 kg, com terra, em casa de vegetação. Sobre elas foi disposta a massa seca triturada de sálvia nas proporções 3,75; 7,5 e 15 t ha -1 , além da testemunha (sem massa). Após 30 dias, o teor de clorofila das plantas de tomate e capim mombaça foi inibido com 7,5 e 15 t ha -1 de sálvia em cobertura. O comprimento da parte aérea do tomate foi inibido em todas as proporções testadas e as plantas de capim mombaça apresentaram redução do crescimento quando se utilizou 15 t ha -1 de sálvia como cobertura. A massa seca das plantas de tomate e capim mombaça reduziu com o uso de 15 t ha -1 e, 7,5 e 15 t ha -1 de sálvia como cobertura, respectivamente. Finalmente, pode-se concluir que houve efeito da sálvia em cobertura sobre o solo em tomate e capim mombaça, mas não houve efeito da mesma sobre as plantas de chia.Palavras-chaves: potencial alelopático, crescimento, sálvia.
