Posterior chamber phakic intraocular lens for the correction of presbyopia in highly myopic patients

Abstract: Purpose: To report the initial experience with a new presbyopic phakic intraocular lens (pIOL) in the correction of high myopia and presbyopia. Setting: Gemini Eye Clinic, Zlin, Czech Republic. Design: Prospective cohort study. Methods: Presbyopic eyes with moderate to high myopia were implanted with a presbyopic posterior chamber pIOL (IPCL). The visual acuities… Show more

“…Recent studies of a novel phakic IOL (IPCL with peripheral holes) by Care Group Inc. achieved a visual acuity of 20/40 or better in 90% of eyes. 17 In our study, 100% of eyes achieved an unaided visual acuity of 20/40 or better, and 73% of eyes could achieve 20/20 or better. In addition, 10% of eyes had a vision of 20/16 or better.…”

“…[7][8][9][10][11][12] Some newer pIOLs models have emerged during the last few years, but there is no evidence regarding their long-term safety and efficacy with a follow-up time of 5 years or longer. [13][14][15][16][17] The current paper demonstrates 1-year visual outcomes of a newer type of phakic IOL (Refractive Intraocular Lens (RIL), Appasamy Associates Inc.) in eyes with moderate to high myopia. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of this model.…”

“…In recent years, a new model of posterior chamber phakic IOL (iPCL) has been developed and is commercially available in some countries [15,17]. Regarding the comparison with the current "gold standard", the Visian ICL, differences in both the material and the design have been previously described, but to the best of our knowledge, there have been no comparative studies searching for differences in the anterior surface roughness between these two IOL models.…”

“…The Implantable Phakic Contact Lens (IPCL; Care Group, Baroda, India) is made using reinforced hybrid acrylic material with medium water content, and its current version features two holes in the superior part of the optic, as well as a central hole in lenses with negative refractive powers and in plus power lenses of up to +3.5 D [34,36]. In addition to its ability to correct myopia, hyperopia, and astigmatism, a multifocal diffractive presbyopia-correcting version of this pIOL is available [36,37].…”
