Diarrhea is a big problem in developing countries that can cause death, especially in toddlers, and cause extraordinary events. There are three risk factors for Diarrhea: environmental, social demographics, and behavior. Environmental factors include waste management. This research aims to determine the relationship between waste management and the incidence of Diarrhea in toddlers. The research design is quantitative analytical with a cross-sectional research design. The population in this study is the total number of children under five in mid-2023, totaling 1428. The sampling technique was proportional random sampling. Data collection method using interviews. Data were analyzed statistically using the chi-square test. The research results showed that the majority of waste management was poor: 68 (87.2%) experienced Diarrhea, and the majority of waste management did not experience Diarrhea well, 12 (66.7%). The results of the data analysis show that the p-value = 0.002, so there is a significant relationship between household waste management and the incidence of Diarrhea in toddlers. The community should always practice clean and healthy living (PHBS), such as good waste management, washing hands with running water, and using soap, especially before feeding toddlers.

Household waste that unmanaged well can lead into the emergence of infectious diseases, like diarrhea. The waste management level in East Kalimantan province increases every year, directly proportional to cases of diarrhea. This research’s aim is to know the relationship between waste management level and cases of diarrhea in East Kalimantan province. This research using secondary datas analysis as the method. Datas related to waste management and cases of diarrhea are collected from Central Bureau of Statistics of East Kalimantan and National Waste Management Information System of KLHK. There are six districts/cities as the location of collecting the secondary datas, which are Samarinda, Balikpapan, Bontang, Kutai Kertanegara, Paser and Penajam Paser Utara. The datas collected from 2018 to 2022. The data analysis used chi-square. This research shows Paser District has the lowest waste management level among the others. Whereas, Bontang City has the highest waste management level. The Paser District also has the highest cases of diarrhea. The value of asymptotic significance (2sided) from the chi-square test (0.129) lower than 0.05, so it can be concluded that Ho were approved. It implicated that there is no relationship between waste management level to cases of diarrhea in the East Kalimantan province.

Previous studies have shown that houses with unhealthy latrines were three times more likely to have diarrhea in toddlers than those with healthy latrines (Kurniawati et al, 2021). Diarrhea is still the second leading cause of death in toddlers besides pneumonia. The highest number of cases of diarrhea in toddlers in East Java is Surabaya. This study aimed to describe the distribution of toddler diarrhea based on risk factors using a regional mapping approach in Surabaya. This study was an ecological study with a regional mapping approach. The independent variables used as risk factors for toddler diarrhea were healthy latrines, drinking water facilities, open defecation free (ODF), and complete basic immunizations. The unit of analysis used was the districts that were processed from the Surabaya Health Profile data in 2019. Results showed most cases of diarrhea under five occurred in Wonokromo, Sawahan, Tambak Sari, and Kenjeran District. There was a significant relationship between toddler diarrhea with complete basic immunization (p = 0.008), while the relationship with healthy latrines, ODF, and drinking water sanitation was not significant. This study concluded that 8 of 31 districts were prioritized for handling toddler diarrhea in Surabaya. In addition, there is a need for dissemination to the community through optimizing the role of health workers at the Puskesmas regarding complete basic relationships and the incidence of diarrhea in toddlers.
