Pleomorphic adenoma of the upper lip: A case report

Abstract: This case report describes a rare and unusual lesion found in 27 year old female, which was diagnosed as pleomorphic adenoma of the minor salivary glands in the upper lip. The tumor was a circumscribed, large firm mass, about 5 cm in diameter, almost obstructing the nasal vestibule and characterized by slow growth. Complete excision was performed and the histopathological analysis showed pleomorphic adenoma. The tumor did not recur. A brief review of the relevant literature is also presented. “…Research has shown epithelial origin of the mixed tumor, as well as clonal chromosome abnormalities with aberrations involving 8q12 and 12q15 [3]. The tumor often displays characteristic chromosomal translocations between chromosomes #3 and #8.…”

“…Another region that is frequently affected by this tumor is the lips. A small minority of tumors are also located in the oral cavity, neck and nasal cavity [1][2][3]. Other intraoral sites include the buccal mucosa, tongue, floor of mouth, tonsil, pharynx, retromolar area, gingiva and nasal cavity [1,4].…”

“…Pleomorphic adenoma arising from minor salivary glands of the lips tends to occur at an earlier age than it does at other sites. (Shrestha et al 2010) Pleomorphic adenoma arising from minor salivary glands of the lips tends to occur at an earlier age than it does at other sites. Bernier found that the peak incidence of pleomorphic adenoma of the lips was in the third and fourth decades, with an average age of 33.2 years.…”

“…Owens and Calcaterra found 90% of the upper lip tumors to be benign in reports in the literature. (Shrestha et al 2010) Fine needle aspiration cytology is a popular method for diagnostic evaluation of salivary gland masses due to their superficial nature and easy accessibility for the procedure. It is a major diagnostic to relevance in head and neck lesions, including salivary glands.…”
