The aim of this paper is to present a Žižekian-Lacanian interpretation of an interesting socio-economic triangle that has so far gained little recognition: the Discourse of Sustainability -Capitalism -China's Economic Expansion. It is sustained here that those three sides are connected and together they build a narrative that is self-perpetuating -at least up to a point. TheLacanian theory of discourse is applied to unveil a less obvious side of that relationship : the discourse of sustainability, as it is presented today is but a discourse of self-indulgence, since most of its versions discuss the possibility of "sustainable consumption", neutralizing the much more powerful discourse of "reducing consumption". China's economic success derives, in that sense from its ability to find a niche as the provider of consumption possibilities for Westerners.Keywords: Sustainability, Lacan, Žižek, China. ResumoO objetivo deste trabalho é apresentar uma interpretação lacaniana de um fenômeno ainda pouco reconhecido: o triângulo socioeconômico entre o discurso da sustentabilidade, capitalismo e a expansão econômica da China. Sustenta-se aqui que esses três lados conectam-se e juntos constroem uma narrativa que perpetua a si mesma. A teoria lacaniana do discurso, bem como a obra de Žižek, são aplicadas para revelar um lado menos óbvio dessa relação, qual seja, o fato de que o discurso da sustentabilidade, como apresentado hoje, torna-se um discurso apologético dos excessos do consumismo ao substituir o discurso da "redução do consumo" pelo paliativo discurso do "consumo sustentável". Why is it so difficult to define concisely the meaning of 'planning' and many of its dominant concepts-public interest, new urbanism, sustainability or smart growth-when deployed in formulating urban policy? Lacan's discourse theory suggests an answer based on an understanding of our human subjectivity, a subjectivity that implicitly seeks to overlook contradiction and ambiguity in our desire to fulfil human aspirations for a harmonious and secure world. This article will use Lacanian theory to examine the beliefs of the planning profession, how they are shaped and then implemented in our urban environments. In particular, Lacan's central theoretical premise of the Four Discourses will be explained and related to planning policy formulation. That is, how planners' acquire and internalise the discipline's diffuse sets of values, beliefs, knowledges and traditions, prior to then imposing them as urban policies on society.

This paper addresses the question of how planning research could be reasserted to balance the relationship between theory and practice. To that end, a twofold approach is taken: on the one hand, different interrelations among planning theory, research and practice are set out building on Jacques Lacan's 'four discourses'-the master's, the university's, the hysteric's and the analyst's. On the other hand, a process to formulate the plan regulador (local normative master plan) of a canton in southern Costa Rica is drawn upon, through storytelling, to shed light on the aforementioned relations. The article's in-conclusion is that among planning theory, research and practice, rather than a synergic co-constitution, linkages that challenge, occlude, bypass or control one another are generated. Moreover, due to the apophenic ability of universal(izing)-technocratic(ized) theories to obviate the 'right measure' between action and reaction, discourses of research and practice are manipulated and the role of theory as 'master signifier' upheld. However, the 'counter-discourses' of both the hysteric and the analyst could be articulated by a planning 'critical-hysterical' research, which, in turn, would allow epiphanies to come to the fore, separate action from reaction and, pragmatically and dynamically, co-constitute planning theory, research and practice.
