Physical fitness and academic performance: empirical evidence from the National Administrative Senior High School Student Data in Taiwan

Abstract: This study examined the relationship between the changes of physical fitness across the 3-year spectrum of senior high school study and academic performance measured by standardized tests in Taiwan. A unique dataset of 149 240 university-bound senior high school students from 2009 to 2011 was constructed by merging two nationwide administrative datasets of physical fitness test performance and the university entrance exam scores. Hierarchical linear regression models were used. All regressions included control… Show more

“…On the other hand, Liao et al . 13 reported that muscular strength and flexibility were, in fact, positively associated with academic performance. It is possible that the discrepancy in results stems from differences in data collection and methods used to measure fitness or academic outcomes.…”

“…Scientists note that educational institutions should provide a much wider range of physical education programs: schoolchildren [13] and students [14]. Modern students prefer a wider range of sports and fitness than the administration can offer them [15] and teachers [16]. It is known that modern young people consider: modern fitness, aerobics, dancing [17], functional training, athletic gymnastics [18].…”

“…Studies have noted that aerobic capacity, as a part of physical fitness, seems to positively affect AA in middle and elementary school students (Bass et al, 2013;Castelli et al, 2007;Kalantari &Esmaeilzadeh, 2016;Aguilar et al, 2015). Some studies have reported that muscular fitness is associated with AA (Coe et al, 2013;Liao et al, 2013). Others have confirmed a statistically significant relationship between fitness and AA, although the direction of causation was not revealed (Chomitz et al, 2009;Lambourne et al, 2013).…”
