Phenotypic diversity of nutrients and anti-nutrients in bean grains grown in different locations

Abstract: The growing environments can influence grain yield and could also to influence the nutritional value of common bean grains. The objective of this study was to determine the levels of minerals, phytic acid and total protein in common bean, and to the relationship of these with grain yield, under the influence of different growing environments. The experiment was conducted with 26 genotypes in three Santa Catarina places of cropping (Anchieta/SC, Joaçaba/SC and Lages/SC, Brazil). Were determined the levels of ph… Show more

“…Common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris) is an excellent source of minerals (Silva et al, 2012;Hossain et al, 2013) and bioactive compounds such as phenolic compounds, phytates, among others (Chávez-Mendoza;Sánchez, 2017;Ganesan;Xu, 2017;García-Díaz et al, 2018). The existing genetic variability in the mineral (Silva et al, 2012;Zilio;Souza;Coelho, 2017) and phenolic compound (Santos et al, 2010;Marathe et al, 2011) concentrations in common bean increases the chances of success in breeding for nutritional quality.…”

“…Coefficients of variation (CV) ≤ 20% were obtained for the traits evaluated in both experiments, except for bioactive compounds, phytates (CV = 23.50%), and phenolic compounds (CV = 21.09%). Zilio, Souza and Coelho (2017) observed CV ≤ 29.80% for the mineral and phytate concentrations evaluated in 26 common bean genotypes of the Mesoamerican and Andean gene pools. These results suggest that adjustments in the technique for the extraction of bioactive compounds in common bean can contribute to increasing experimental precision.…”
