Study on the Development of Antiviral Spandex Fabric Coated with Poly(Hexamethylene Biguanide) Hydrochloride (PHMB)

The spread of COVID-19 has brought about huge losses around the world. This study aims to investigate the applicability of PHMB used for developing antiviral spandex clothing against coronavirus. PHMB was qualitatively determined on the surface of spandex fabrics by using BPB. The antiviral analysis shows that the PHMB-treated spandex fabric can kill 99% of the coronavirus within 2 h of contact, which suggests that the spandex fabric treated with PHMB could be used for developing antiviral clothing against coronaviruses for containing the transmission of COVID-19 in high-risk places. Furthermore, PHMB-treated spandex fabrics were shown excellent antibacterial activity against gram-positive S. aureus and gram-negative K. pneumoniae. The hand feel properties of Spandex fabric were not significantly affected by the PHMB coating in addition to the wrinkle recovery, which was obviously improved after PHMB coating.

Weft knitted single jersey (S/J) and lycra single jersey (lycra S/J) fabrics are popular in the textile industry for their lightweight and excellent physical and dimensional properties. However, the property investigation is required to ensure the quality before starting bulk production with any fabrics. The main aim of this study is to compare the physical and dimensional properties of S/J and lycra S/J with considering the manufacturing parameters in order to reduce the manufacturing time as well as cost. The physical properties such as grey GSM (Gram per square meter), finish GSM, bursting strength, color fastness to washing and rubbing; dimensional properties i.e., shrinkage and spirality of S/J and lycra S/J fabric have been investigated and compared while the manufacturing parameters stitch length, machine diameter, machine gauge, number of needles, width etc. and finishing parameters were same. In this current research, the internationally approved methods are performed for example ISO to test fabric GSM, spirality and color fastness to wash; ASTM for bursting strength test; AATCC to measure the shrinkage and color fastness to rubbing or crocking. During the investigation, it is observed that there is a significant difference between grey GSM, finish GSM and bursting strength for both of the fabrics. Moreover, the shrinkage property of lycra S/J fabric is better than S/J fabric. In terms of color fastness to rubbing and spirality, slight differences are found too. However, in case of color fastness to wash, both fabrics exhibited similar behavior.

This study aimed to investigate the effect of extensibility on cotton blended polyester-spandex core-spun yarn in the weft direction of 3/1 right-handed Z-twill denim. For the preparation of samples, 100% ring spun cotton yarn of 42 tex (14 s /1 Ne) was used as warp, and 70:30, 30:70, 60:40, and 40:60 cotton-polyester core-spun yarn of 30 tex (20 s /1) was used in the weft direction. Four categories of denim fabric were fabricated by using the air-jet weaving machine. Spandex yarn was used as a core material of weft with a percentage of 2%, 2.5%, 1.9%, and 1.8% respectively. Different physio-mechanical characteristics namely tensile and tearing strength, GSM, growth and recovery percentage, initial modulus, bending length, drape co-efficiency, abrasion resistance, flexural rigidity were evaluated to justify the quality of fabricated pieces of denim. Water wicking and breathability were taken into consideration when determining comfort. Higher cotton containing specimens exhibited lower tensile and tearing strength. Additionally, the produced denim fabrics showed balanced drapability and good breathability.
