Introduction: Although previous studies have characterized the sociodemographic profile and physical activity level of older people at the Universities of the Third Age (Unati - Universidade Aberta da Terceira Idade), there are research gaps regarding the relationship of these variables with the psychological aspects and the quality of life. Objective: To assess the relationship between sociodemographic and psychological variables, physical activity level and quality of life (QoL) in older people at Unati in Campinas, São Paulo, Brazil. Method: This is a cross-sectional study that recruited 116 older participants of both gender, aged between 60 and 89 years. They were submitted to the following tests: the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale (RSES), the Wagnild & Young’s Resilience Scale (RS), the General Self-Efficacy Scale (GSE), the WHOQOL BREF, the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE), the Self-Reporting Questionnaire (SRQ20) and the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ). The data were analyzed using the Kolmogorov-Smirnov, chi-squared, Fisher’s exact, t- and Mann-Whitney U tests, as well as the generalized linear models. Results: Self-esteem was associated with age, income, schooling level, membership time, and the psychological domain of the WHOQOL-BREF (p < 0.05). Resilience was associated with the schooling level and the psychological domain of the WHOQOL-BREF (p < 0.05), and the self-efficacy with the psychological domain of the WHOQOL-BREF. Common mental disorders were related to the physical and psychological domains of the WHOQOL-BREF, as well as the self-efficacy and being male. The physical activity level showed no correlation with the psychological aspects and the sociodemographic variables studied (p > 0.05). Conclusion: The sociodemographic variables influence emotional aspects, particularly older people’s self-esteem and resilience at Unati. Additionally, the psychological domain of the WHOQOL-BREF was a predictor of all the emotional variables in this sample.

In 2015, a report led by the mentors of the World Health Organization Age-friendly cities program, proposed a review of the concept of active aging, including, alongside the three pillars (health, security and participation), lifelong learning, both as formal education (access to grade and diplomas), and in their informal dimension (when learning take places in daily life or in leisure activities). This study aims to analyze if the question of lifelong learning was raised and what the salient themes were related to that topic during the discussions of some of the focus groups of a research that applied the "Age-friendly cities" method in two neighborhoods of São Paulo. The two focus groups were conducted in 2016 in Mooca neighborhood: one composed of 5 residents between 60 and 75 years old, and one of 6 residents aged 76 years and over. Although the age-friendly cities guidelines did not predict specific questions about lifelong learning, the theme came up with a number of nuances in the discourses. Five general content categories have been achieved: 1) Learning: Activities and Spaces; 2) Learning and Accessibility; 3) Education: Respect, Consideration; 4) Learning and Work; 5) Learning and Aging. There was little emphasis on formal education, but aspects related to respect for older people and opportunities for leisure and social participation were quite present. In participants view, the simple offer of activities does not guarantee lifelong learning, since different types of barriers may make it difficult for older people to access them. Buscando operacionalizar o conceito de funcionalidade, a Organização Mundial da Saúde publicou a Classificação Internacional de Funcionalidade, Incapacidade e Saúde (CIF), que possibilita o registro de perfis de funcionalidade, incapacidade e saúde e seus domínios relacionados. Objetivo. Conhecer o estado de funcionalidade dos participantes de um serviço de atenção ao idoso utilizando a CIF. Método. A amostra foi composta por 59 participantes, que responderam a dois questionários elaborados, com base na CIF, além do Miniexame do Estado Mental (MEEM). Os dados foram tratados no IBM SPSS Statistics 20. Resultados. Registrou-se idade média de 65,8 anos (± 7,5), prevalência de mulheres, indivíduos com alta escolaridade e com renda familiar de 8 salários mínimos ou mais. Pontuação igual ou superior a 25 pontos no MEEM foi alcançada por 89,8% da amostra. A maioria dos participantes nãoapresentou deficiência em Funções do Corpo nem dificuldade em Atividades e Participação e considerou seu ambiente como facilitador, o que permitiu inferir que tais sujeitos apresentaram bom estado de funcionalidade. Porém, os que o fizeram relataram dificuldades relativas às funções mentais e atividades relacionadas à cognição. A CIF mostrou-se um importante instrumento para acessar a saúde e seus estados relacionados possibilitando uma leitura das necessidades dos sujeitos, não apenas ressaltando as demandas biológicas, psicológicas e sociais, mas também indicando a interdependência entre as mesmas.
