Partial splenectomy for a giant epidermoid cyst of the spleen

Abstract: Key Clinical MessageThe splenic epidermoid cysts are rare benign tumors, and a definitive treatment remains unclear. Although some spleen‐preserving approaches have been reportedly used, splenic cyst recurrence usually occurs in true cyst cases, wherein the cyst is incompletely removed. In our case, partial splenectomy was performed and the giant cyst was completely removed.

“…The surgical approach should be determined by the type, shape, location, size, number of the cysts, amount of remaining healthy splenic tissue, and patient's age. 17,18 The main objectives of treatment remain the cyst removal, the splenic function preservation and, if possible, the prevention of recurrences. The best surgical technique is not completely defined in literature, 19 and it is a difficult challenge to surgeons.…”

“…CT scan imaging might aid in the preoperative planning for removal of large cysts, although definitive answers are best obtained at the surgical time. The main objectives of treatment remain the cyst removal, the splenic function preservation and, if possible, the prevention of recurrences.…”
