Parasitoids of the Sawfly,Arge pullata, in the Shennongjia National Nature Reserve

Abstract: Larvae of the argid sawfly, Arge pullata (Zaddach) (Hymenoptera: Argidae), feeds on leaves of birch (Betula spp.) in China, Europe, Siberia, and Japan. Parasitoids of A. pullata were studied in Shennongjia National Nature Reserve, Hubei Province, China, in 2009 and 2010. Five parasitoid species were found: Pleolophus suigensis (Uchida), Mastrus nigrus Sheng, Endasys parviventris nipponicus (Uchida) (Hymenoptera: Ichneumonidae), Vibrissina turrita (Meigen) (Diptera: Tachinidae) and Conura xanthostigma (Dalman) … Show more

“…Ctenopelmatine ichneumonids could serve as possible primary hosts via sawfly larva as the members of the subfamily are larval koinobiont endoparasitoids of sawflies (Gauld & Bolton 1988, Schnee 2011. Another possible primary host group for P. hahnii are tachinid flies that attack lepidopteran (or even symphytan) larvae (Weinstein & Austin 1991, Schnee 2011 as several trigonalid wasp species have indeed been reared from tachinid puparia (Li et al 2012, Smith et al 2012. There are some erroneous or at least highly dubious old records that P. hahnii could parasitize vespine wasps (Vespidae) or their parasitoids.…”

“…Reared from Vibrissina turrita ( Diptera : Tachinidae ) parasitizing Arge pullata ( Hymenoptera : Argidae ). Hyperparasitoid of Tachinidae in Argidae ( Li et al 2012 ). Collected in April–October at 500–2530 m.…”

“…Vibrissina turrita was found as a dominant parasitoid in Arge pullata, which is a birch pest (Li, Sheng, Sun & Luo, 2012). Nagasaka (1988) reported the species Athalia rosae as a new host of V. turrita.…”
