This work provides a study about the incorporation of a high density polyethylene (HDPE) matrix composite in medium density fiberboards (MDF). A composite was processed in a single screw extruder with 5% of Pinus spp fibers in a HDPE matrix and applied as reinforcing agent in MDFs, as well as pure HDPE, in 11 different variations, using 12% of urea-formaldehyde resin and nominal density of 750 kg.m−3. The composite and the pure HDPE were analyzed by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The DSC results showed that both polymeric matrix and composite presented the same melting temperature but the composite had a reduced melting enthalpy and crystallinity due to thermal history. SEM analysis showed a well distribution of fibers on the composite. The results of technological properties of MDFs were compared to commercial MDF standards. The MDF reinforced with 40% of polymeric composite reached all minimum standard requirements, being the most recommended to be used as an alternative to conventional MDF, in terms of physical and mechanical performance.

The study aimed to produce biodegradable composite materials from sugar cane straw and castor oil-based resin. The fibers were used in two sizes: 0 <fibers ≤4.27mm and 4.27 <fibers <10mm; resin in the proportion of 10%, 15% and 20%. The preparation method was carried out according to NBR 14810-2: 2018, using the compression molding technique at room temperature. Physical assays were carried out: moisture and swelling; mechanical assays: static bending and compression. The morphological assay was evaluated: scanning electron microscopy; and the composite biodegradability assay, over a three-month period. In order to validate the results, the statistic graphic was performed with significance at 5% by the F test, compared to the means by the Scott-knott test of the physical and mechanical treatments. The results showed that the values of the physical assays have met the minimum limits established by the standard, resulting in 8.72% swelling of the composite material. In the mechanical assay, the composite with less fiber and 20% resin was more resistant in the bend test with a capacity of 3.69 N/mm², and in the compression assay with 2.98 N/mm². The morphological analysis showed a wide interaction at the matrix/reinforcement interface. The biodegradation assay showed that over the months the composites started to lose weight, which shows the improvement of the degradation. Therefore, the composite produced has great potential in the market, it is considered biodegradable and of low cost compared to composites produced from synthetic fibers.

The bamboo waste can be an alternative material to sustain the crescent demand for particleboards, also bringing ecological benefits as reduction of the pressure for raw materials and landfill space demands. In this context, this research aimed to manufacture and determine some physical and mechanical properties of particleboards with bamboo waste particles (Dendrocalamus giganteus), obtained from different sources, bonded with four different percentages of urea–formaldehyde (UF) based resin (6%, 8%, 10% and 12% related to dry material of particles). Response variables investigated were: density; moisture content; thickness swelling in 2 and 24 hours; water absorption in 2 and 24 hours; internal adhesion (STpe); strength in tension parallel to faces (STpa); modulus of elasticity (MOE) and modulus of rupture (MOR). Results permitted to conclude that particleboards as mentioned showed good performance only in the physical properties requirements imposed by Brazilian Standard NBR 14810, but this was not observed to mechanical properties considered. New researches are needed in order to optimize the producing process parameters.
