A utilização do etanol como combustível é apontada hoje como uma das principais alternativas energéticas para o futuro, em substituição aos combustíveis fósseis, que, em sua reação de combustão liberam grandes quantidades de dióxido de carbono (CO2), considerado o principal responsável pelo aquecimento global. Nesse sentido, o objetivo deste trabalho consiste em estudar as diferentes tecnologias e matérias-primas utilizadas na obtenção de etanol. Para isso, foram identificados os processos envolvidos na produção de etanol, para as diferentes matérias-primas; enumerados os equipamentos e as fontes de energia utilizadas em sua produção e feita uma comparação entre as diferentes matérias-primas e os diferentes processos aplicados. Verificou-se que as matérias-primas podem ser divididas em três grupos: sacaríneas, que são aquelas cujo etanol é obtido a partir da sacarose, como, por exemplo, cana-de-açúcar e beterraba açucareira; amiláceas, as quais o açúcar que dá origem ao etanol é o amido, como, por exemplo, batata, mandioca e milho; e celulósicas, as quais contém celulose, que pode ser convertido em etanol, como madeira e resíduos agroindustriais. A partir da análise das mesmas, foi possível perceber que a cana-de-açúcar possui as maiores vantagens, pois apresenta maior produtividade de etanol por área além de um menor custo de produção.
O presente artigo apresenta uma revisão sobre potencialidades da utilização de resíduos sólidos orgânicos da indústria de extração de óleo vegetais de dendê, soja, mamona e girassol; para a produção de biodiesel. O cenário atual e futuro da produção de biodiesel no Brasil indicam um crescimento significativo do setor até o ano de 2020. Com a implantação da obrigatoriedade de proporções maiores deste combustível no óleo diesel, teremos conseqüentemente, a geração de uma grande quantidade de descartes sólidos orgânicos com grande potencial e possibilidades de utilização no mercado.Esses resíduos sólidos orgânicos podem representar ganhos econômicos na região onde serão gerados. Há necessidade de mais investimento em pesquisa sobre a utilização destes produtos, porém estudos realizados já mostram seu potencial para a geração de renda e desenvolvimento não somente para a cadeia produtiva do biodiesel, mas para toda a região onde estão inseridos.
O desenvolvimento de novas metodologias para a produção de biopolímeros biodegradáveis por meio de recursos renováveis tem se apresentado como alternativa para a redução de impacto ambiental provocado pelos polímeros derivados de petróleo. O amido, fibra lignocelulósica e plastificante estão conquistando, cada vez mais espaço nesse segmento. O amido, além de ser barato é abundante na natureza, já se destaca na produção de biopolímeros, necessitando de tratamento especial, como a adição de fibra, plastificante, para produzir um produto mais resistente. O objetivo deste trabalho foi produzir e caracterizar um material compósito biodegradável fabricado a partir de resíduos agroenergéticos (bagaço da cana-de-açúcar, amido de milho e glicerol). O procedimento baseou-se na técnica de casting, utilizada em materiais poliméricos que permitem ser derramados por baixa viscosidade, obtendo uma forma desejada através da confecção de um molde. Foi produzida a matriz de amido com bons resultados nos ensaios mecânicos e posteriormente, produzidos os compósitos poliméricos com a aderência da fibra de bagaço de cana-de-açúcar. Os compósitos poliméricos apresentaram altos valores de resistência à tração, e módulo Young, e valores baixos de alongamento na ruptura. Os ensaios de infravermelho mostram bandas semelhantes entre os compósitos, apresentaram também, baixa densidade e solubilidade em água, e alta degradabilidade em solos com alto teor de umidade. Os ensaios de microscopia eletrônica por varredura mostraram grânulos de amido intactos, acarretando a uma redução da força de resistência e alongamento.
