Several wood species from the Amazon region are used in the manufacture of furniture, which leaves behind large amounts of waste (slabs, sawdust, sanding dust and bark), thus causing serious environmental impacts. An interesting alternative for the use of these wastes is the manufacture of particleboards. However, few studies have focused on the behavior of Amazonian tree species and the wastes resulting from production with this type of material. This paper discusses the potential use of Tauari (Couratari oblongifolia) wood waste as a raw material for the production of particleboards, using castor oil-based bi-component polyurethane adhesive. Experimental boards were prepared with dry wood particles and a castor-oil polyurethane adhesive content of 16%. The boards, whose nominal density was 1000 kg⋅m , with higher IB and TS than those specified by the NBR 14810-2 and ANSI A208.1 standards, enabling this product to be classified as high-density particleboard suitable for industrial and commercial use.

Resumo Os painéis reconstituídos à base de madeira são uma alternativa para utilização na construção civil e na indústria do mobiliário. Dentre os tipos de painéis, destacam-se o OSB (Oriented Strand Board) e o MDP (Medium Density Particleboard). O objetivo desta pesquisa foi avaliar as propriedades físicas e mecânicas de painéis híbridos OSB/MDP, visando uma alternativa de uso em novo sistema fabril com o reaproveitamento de partículas de madeira. Foram fabricados painéis OSB, híbridos e MDP em escala laboratorial e determinadas suas respectivas propriedades físicas e mecânicas de acordo com as normas EN 300:2006 e ABNT NBR 14.810-2:2013. A influência dos tipos de painéis nas propriedades foi investigada pela análise de variância (ANOVA), os testes de normalidade de Anderson-Darling (AD) e de homogeneidade de variâncias de Bartlett (Bt) foram utilizados na verificação da validade das hipóteses da ANOVA. O teste de comparações múltiplas de Tukey foi utilizado para o agrupamento dos níveis do fator (tipo de painel) nas propriedades avaliadas. Os valores obtidos para as propriedades físicas e mecânicas dos painéis híbridos OSB/MDP alcançaram os valores mínimos determinados pelas normas vigentes. Os painéis híbridos apresentaram propriedades que permitem sua aplicação estrutural e em ambientes úmidos.

Researches regarding the use of agricultural residues as raw material for the fibrous pulp and paper industries are important, especially the use of castor (Ricinus communis L.), whose application can be found in many sectors of the economy, with its main product derived from the oil of its seeds. Thus, this study aimed to investigate the physico-chemical properties of castor fibrous waste, such as leaves, branches and stems to evaluate the potential of these residues for pulp and paper production. Results of physico-chemical analysis of castor residues revealed the following contents: 80.10 % of holocellulose (50.56% of cellulose and 29.64% of hemicellulose); 17.34% of lignin; 1.48% of ash; 1.24% of extractives soluble in hot water; and 1.88% of extractives soluble in organic solvents. In general, fibrous crop residues of castor presented as a good alternative for pulp and paper manufacturing, since they have high cellulose content compared with its basic density.
