This experiment was implemented to study the physical and mechanical properties of Medium Density Fiberboard (MDF) manufactured from Old Corrugated Containers OCCs using three variables including density of board (0.6 g/cm3 and 0.7 g/cm3), resin content of urea-formaldehyde (8 %, 10 % and 12 %) and pressing time (25, 30 and 35 minutes). Results showed that board density proved to be an important factor affecting MDF manufacturing, board density showed significant effects on both Modulus Of Elasticity (MOE) and Modulus Of Rapture (MOR), while it had no significant effect on Internal Bonding (IB), higher board density (0.7 g/cm3) surpass low board density (0.6 g/cm3). The percent resin content and press time gave a significant effect on mechanical properties except IB. Also, it was noticed a perfection of boards combined at 12% resin contents and 30 minutes of mechanical properties. The triple intercourse between main effects showed to be significant for MOR, MOE and IB, generally boards made of higher density (0.7 g/cm3) with 12% resin content at pressing time 30 minutes developed better mechanical properties than other boards. According to the physical properties, board density showed a significant effect on Water Absorption (WA), Thickness Swelling (TS) and Linear Expansion (LE) after 2 and 24 hours of submersion in water. The resin content at 12 % and pressing time at 30 minutes showed better mechanical and physical properties.

Os oriented strand board (OSB) são um importante produto de madeira projetado, fabricado através da colagem de partículas strand em camadas cruzadas, sendo amplamente aplicado em construções, embalagens, decks, pisos, revestimentos de paredes e até mesmo para fins de suporte de carga. Para a produção destes painéis, podemos utilizar de biomassa da agricultura, como resíduos da atividade cafeeira. O objetivo desta pesquisa foi avaliar a composição química da madeira de café e do pinus, bem como as propriedades físicas e mecânicas dos painéis produzidos com a substituição do pinus pelo resíduo. Os painéis OSB produzidos, utilizaram a substituição do pinus pela madeira de café em 0 (T1), 25 (T2), 50 (T3), 75 (T4) e 100% (T5). Os resultados mostram que houve melhorias significativas nas propriedades físico-mecânicas e que os tratamentos atenderam o mínimo exigido por norma, com exceção do T2. Evidencia-se, portanto, o potencial de utilização do resíduo da madeira de café para a produção de painéis OSB, uma vez que este bioproduto que evitará a destinação incorreta do resíduo e vários outros problemas ambientais.

New eco-friendly composites consisting of castor oil-based polyurethane (PU) resin, wood sawdust, and rubber tire powder were produced, and the morphological, physical, and flexural properties were investigated. The composites were composed of varying the concentration of the PU matrix (30, 40, and 50 m%) and the wood-to-rubber ratio of the disperse phase (100/0, 90/10, 80/20, 70/30, 60/40, and 50/50 m%/m% wood/rubber, respectively). The morphology of the composites was studied by optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy, and the flexural properties, water absorption (WA), and thickness swelling (TS) were also investigated. The analysis of variance was used to study the effect of each factor (PU content and wood/rubber ratio) on the characteristics of the composites. PU/wood/rubber composites were successfully molded and their characteristics are promising for commercial use. According to the results, the composites presenting higher wood content (high wood/rubber ratio) showed higher modulus of rupture and modulus of elasticity values, although the addition and the increase of rubber content decreased these properties. Moreover, increasing PU or reducing the wood/rubber ratio significantly reduced the WA and TS, improving dimensional stability.
