Oral Rehabilitation with Implant‐Retained Overdenture in a Patient with Down Syndrome

Abstract: Down syndrome, known as trisomy 21, is the most common chromosomal disorder. The disorder affects mental and systemic development as well as oral structure, including dental anomalies, high susceptibility of periodontal disease, and poor quality of alveolar bone. This report presents a case of dental rehabilitation by means of dental implants of a patient with Down syndrome. Two titanium dental implants were placed in the maxilla, and three titanium dental implants were installed in the mandible. One implant w… Show more

“…Studies of implant rehabilitations in patients with T21 described in the literature include case reports of single tooth rehabilitations 15,12,13 with one case of immediate loading 15 and reports of full arch rehabilitations. 16,18,25 Regarding dental implant survival in patients with T21, the literature reports survival from 74% 4 to 84.5%. 26 The reason for this increased risk of dental implant failure in patients with T21 is not yet fully understood, however some factors have been suggested.…”

“…9 Despite the large number of oral and systemic changes found in patients with T21, there are few studies in the scientific literature on implant therapy in these patients [10][11][12] other than clinical case reports with promising results. 4,[13][14][15][16][17][18] Studies with patients with T21 have great scientific and social relevance, because in this way we can enable a healthier and higher quality life for this population. 18 With the increase in life expectancy of people with T21 in recent decades 19 it is necessary to expand knowledge to offer implant treatment possibilities aimed at serving this aging population group, differentiating from pediatric dentistry treatment.…”

“…The advantage of such combination are: good stabilization, chance of dental bear of mastication forces, preservation of alveolar ridge and periodontal receptors as well as quick patient adaptation to new oral condition 11 . Besides attachments on the strong teeth-abutments the implant units might be involved for better OD stability reason, especially in mental disordered patients (hyperkinetism) 52 .…”
