Sinus lift technique and dental implants for rehabilitation for a Down syndrome patient with tomographic 3‐years follow‐up

Abstract: Down Syndrome or trisomy 21 (T21) is a genetic condition caused by the presence of an extra chromosome in pair 21 and is related to a high prevalence of agenesis of permanent teeth and periodontal alterations that may be associated to the loss of permanent teeth at early ages. With the increase in life expectancy of people with T21 in the last decades, it is necessary to expand the knowledge to offer possibilities of treatment with dental implants, aiming to serve this aging population. Aims: The aim of this a… Show more

“…16 In the literature, implantsupported fixed or removable dentures are the most common treatment method for replacing lost teeth of individuals with DS. [17][18][19][20] Although individuals with DS are in an increased risk group for dental implant use due to their susceptibility to periodontal diseases, it is stated that there is no significant difference in the success rates of the treatments when compared to the general population, with correct planning, correct patient selection and the patient's ability to provide optimum oral hygiene. 21,22 Lustig et al stated that toothsupported fixed partial dentures could also be used as an alternative to the implant-supported prosthesis.…”

“…Furthermore, bone loss can also occur due to periodontal disease, traumatic surgeries, or even for physiological reasons due to lack of adequate or inadequate prosthetic loading. Trauma to the facial region can affect both soft and hard tissues, so these injuries can affect the victim's quality of life and health [3].…”

“…When a dental element is lost in the posterior region of the maxilla, there is natural reabsorption of the alveolar process and at the same time, pneumatization of the maxillary sinus occurs. It will increase its volume towards the location where the roots existed and this will often make it difficult or unfeasible to restore implants in that location [1][2][3]. For this reason, the maxillary sinus floor elevation procedure should be performed, or short implants should be performed when possible.…”
