Background Oral hygiene is an integral part of general health of a person. Nurses qualified about oral care can play an important role in improving the quality of oral health in hospitalized patients. This study investigated the educational needs of nurses in the field of oral health of hospitalized patients. Methods The study used the modified Delphi method in three rounds. Fifty faculty members of the School of Dentistry and Nursing were selected via purposive sampling. The data collection tool was a demographic form and an open-ended questionnaire in the first round and a structured questionnaire in the next rounds. The analysis was performed using both content and descriptive analysis techniques. Results The top ten oral health education priorities for nurses were greater than 75% with a consensus level: oral anatomy and physiology, learning the signs and symptoms of common oral diseases, learning of oral medications and administration, learning the drugs that cause damage to the mouth and teeth, training in managing dental emergencies, patient education for tooth brushing and taking care of the mouth, especially in the elderly patient, providing oral and dental care, training for unconscious and fasting patients, undergoing chemotherapy and radiotherapy, and hospitalization in intensive care unit. Conclusion The findings of the study emphasized the need for interdisciplinary cooperation between nursing and dental professionals for the development of an oral health curriculum for nurses to promote and improve oral health and prevent dental diseases in hospitalized patients and the community.

Background- Nursing staff isthe connecting link between the doctors and their patients. With profound knowledge of oral hygiene, they can upgrade,enhance and inculcate good oral hygiene practices among their patients, thereby sets thinking and triggers of giving more comprehensive knowledge to the nurses.Hence,we decided to conduct the present study to assess the oral health knowledge, attitude and practices among the nursing students of VidyaShikshakPrasarak Mandal (VSPM) college of Nursing. Materials and Methods – A 22 item pre-validated close ended questionnaire based on knowledge, attitude and practices of oral hygiene were being filled by 425 nursing students following a sensitization lecture was delivered. After a month, the same questionnaire was filled by the same participants. The answers of pre and post sensitization lecture were compared. Result- The response towards use of fluoridated toothpaste had increased to 268(63%) which was initially 170 (40%).The frequency for visiting the dentist had increased to 241( 57%)which was initially to a much lower number,i.e.,75 ( 18%) Conclusion –Sensitization lectures given to the nursing students have proved to be of assistance in upgrading the knowledge of oral hygiene practices to the nursing students to the core. Objetivo: Investigar a importância da saúde bucal e a frequência e os meios utilizados na higienização da cavidade oral, assim como o conhecimento e as condutas de universitários frente às doenças bucais. Método: Estudo descritivo e qualitativo desenvolvido com universitários de diferentes nacionalidades. Os dados foram coletados pela aplicação de questionário. Resultados: Para os participantes, a importância da saúde bucal estava vinculada à prevenção de doenças, à estética, à autoestima e à saúde geral. Quanto à frequência e aos meios utilizados na escovação, todos higienizavam a cavidade oral diariamente e a maioria utilizava escova e creme dental. Eles associavam as doenças orais à dor, ao sangramento, aos problemas dentários e à falta de escovação. Além do dentista, buscavam o médico e o enfermeiro para resolução de problemas odontológicos. Conclusão: Apesar de reconhecerem a importância da saúde oral, o conhecimento dos universitários sobre as patologias bucais foi escasso e muito limitado.
