Optimal location of series FACTS devices to control line overloads in power systems with high wind feeding

Abstract: The planned offshore wind farms in Germany are basically located in North region. For wind integration in Germany, establishing new transmission lines and employing new technologies have become unavoidable. Establishing new transmission lines is very costly and difficult regarding enviromental condition. One of the solutions is the utilization of Flexible AC Transmission Systems (FACTS). This paper discusses a method for determining the placement of series compensation to control line overload in power systems… Show more

“…In this instance, the grid should supply the required power according to load demand. Hence, to take advantage of its full capacity at nighttime, the inverter is used to supply reactive power to the grid [9,10,[12][13][14][15].…”

“…Placement of FACTS devices within the system is mainly done to improve the voltage profile of the system, system loadability and minimization of losses. System performance analysis using GA and PSO (Shakib et al 2009) shows that PSO gives better placement of FACTS devices to increase availability of power at users end. Variable speed wind turbines equipped with doubly fed induction generator (DFIG) are also widely used for advanced reactive power and voltage control strategies for wind-integrated systems (Shi et al 2012).…”

“…FACTS controllers [9] include Thyristor Controlled series compensators(TCSC), Static Var Compensators(SVC), Thyristor Controlled Phase Angle Regulator (TCPAR), Static Compensators(STATCOM), Unified Power Flow Controllers(UPFC)etc., There are several indices/methods proposed in literature for placement of FACTS controllers from system loadability, voltage stability, wind power integration and power system security viewpoint. A method to determine a line which is highly sensitive to the new generation strategies,(i.e) wind integration sensitivity index was studied to locate TCSCs in [2]. Device allocation under system fluctuations due to demand and renewable generation were investigated in [12].…”
