Optical Isotope Shifts in Ba II Even Isotopes with Lamb-dip Technique

Abstract: Isotope shifts of the 2D5/2,3/2-2P3/2 transitions in Ba II even isotopes have been measured by means of Lamb-dip spectroscopy. The obtained values are:Δν138-136 = -94 ± 4 MHz; Δν138-134 = -192 ± 7 MHzfor λ = 614 nmΔν138-136 = -101 ± 8 MHz; Δν138-134 = -195 ± 9 MHzfor λ = 585 nm.The nuclear volume effect for these isotopes seems to be negligible.

“…As the magnitude of this contact term does not depend on J, its value can be estimated by combining relations (1) and (2). This leads to a c = -62 MHz for the D-levels, while the contact term for the P-levels is negligibly small.…”

“…However, King plots [3] using their values indicate rather large errors in some of the measured isotope shifts. In a recent paper [4] we introduced the saturated absorption (Lamb-dip) technique in a crossed laser-ion beam geometry to measure isotope shifts in free Ba 11 ions. This technique offers an independent means t o remeasure the Xe 11 isotope shifts.…”

“…Optical isotope shifts of both stable and unstable Ba isotopes have been studied extensively over the last few years by high-resolution spectroscopy using tunable dye lasers (Hohle et a1 1978, Alvarez et al 1978, Bekk et a1 1979, Baird et a1 1979, Silverans et a1 1980, Neugart et a1 1981. We have remeasured the isotope shifts in the Ba 11 5d 2D3/2,5/2 + 6p 2P3/2 transitions with an accuracy improved by more than one order of magnitude in order to reveal a possible J dependence in the metastable 5d 2D3/2,5/2 doublet.…”
