An einer paradigmatischen Stelle des Orlando furioso (1516-1532) beschreibt Ariost die Seereise des christlichen Ritters Astolfo wie folgt: "girato da l'India all'Inghilterra / tutto avea il lato destro della terra" [nachdem er von Indien bis nach England / die ganze rechte Seite der Erde umkreist hatte] (1976, XXII, 24) (→ 31. Die ‚Neue Welt'). Auf den ersten Blick scheinen diese Verse völlig verständ-lich zu sein. Bei genauerer Betrachtung stellen sich jedoch Zweifel ein: Inwiefern kann man ‚die ganze rechte Seite der Erde' umsegeln? Aus welcher Perspektive kann man ‚l'India' (Indien bzw. Asien) zur rechten Seite der Erde und England der linken Seite zuordnen? Und wo fängt dieses ‚Links' überhaupt an? Auch wenn man nicht wüsste, dass Ariost die Welt des Furioso auf der Cosmographia Universalis (1507) von Martin Waldseemüller und z. T. auf der ovalen Weltkarte (1507-1508) von Francesco Rosselli mit höchster und vergnügter Akribie konstruierte (Doroszlaï 1998), wäre anzunehmen, dass eine mappamundi, eine zweidimensionale Projektion der gesamten Erde dieser poetischen Aussage zugrunde liegt (Italiano 2012). Astolfo kann sich von rechts nach links bewegen, weil er wie ein Zeigefinger auf einer Karte (auf einer tabula) kursiert, die genordet ist. Diese Vorstellung ist allerdings weniger selbstverständlich für das frühe 16. Jahrhundert. Die konventionelle kartographische Ausrichtung der Welt-Karten war nämlich spätestens seit dem 7. Jahrhundert -seit der von Isidor von Sevilla entworfenen TO-Karte -eine ‚wahre' Orientierung, eine Ausrichtung nach Osten. Erst mit der Wiederentdeckung von Klaudius Ptolemaios' Geographie zu Beginn des 15. Jahrhunderts und der darauf folgenden Herstellung von Karten nach dem genordeten Schema des alexandrinischen Gelehrten (Roberts 2013) wurde die übliche, solarmythologische Ostrichtung langsam verabschiedet. Die berühmteste und ausführlichste Weltkarte des 15. Jahrhunderts ist allerdings keine nordorientierte, sondern die südorientierte mappamundi des Fra Mauro. Ariosts Verse suggerieren uns letztendlich ein mehrfach ‚kartographisches Schreiben', schließlich zeigt sich in jener ‚rechten Seite der Erde' nicht nur, wie die Literatur die Transformationen des räumlichen Denkens und der Raumpraktiken einer Epoche darstellt, sondern auch wie die Schrift, die dichterische Sprache per se, bestimmte fundamentale Strukturen und Funktionen der kartographischen Brought to you by | Stockholms Universitet Authenticated Download Date | 7/26/15 11:40 PM

This essay examines the role of geometry in military theory around 1700 and its critical reception in Laurence Sterne’s Tristram Shandy. Juxtaposing literature, maps, and war games, the essay outlines a poetics of war in the eighteenth century and traces the decline of the geometrical order that governs it. A forged continuation of Sterne’s novel written in the immediate aftermath of the Napoleonic Wars reveals the development of a new poetics and the installment of a military order based on topography and chance.

The ArgumentThe vine louse Phylloxera vastatrix became a “pest” as it was transferred from North America and from France to Germany during the 1870s. Embodying the “invading alien,” it assumed a cultural position that increasingly gained importance in Imperial Germany. In this process, the minute insect, living invisibly underground, was made visible and became constitutive of the scientific-technological object, “pest,” pertaining to a scientific discipline, modern economic entomology. The “pest” phylloxera emerged by being made visible in a way that enabled control measures against it. Thus, visibility functioned as a prerequisite for control measures. I differentiate between social visibility and physical visibility, as well as between social control and physical control of the “introduced pest.” The object phylloxera emerged at the intersection of techniques of social control such as surveillance, techniques of physical control such as disinfection, and representational practices of the sciences such as mathematics and graphics. The space of its visibility was not the vineyard as property of a vintner but the vineyard as national territory, where German (viti-) culture was defended against foreign infiltration and destruction. Many vintners had alternate visions of the grapevine disease, they resented the invasion and destruction of their vineyards by government officers, and thus they did not participate in the social and epistemic constitution of the “pest.” By 1914, the “introduced pest” had not yet become an effective “machinery.” However, the “pest” as an object of scientific knowledge emerged together with economic entomology. The field became organized as a discipline in Germany in 1913, forty years after the phylloxera had first aroused the minds of some worried Wilhelmians, and, together with its nationalistic images, the field of “pest” control became organized towards a redefinition of German society and its perceived dangers.
