This article reviews the conceptual, methodological, and empirical insights gained from a systematic analysis of 65 studies conducted on this subject. “…Cavusgil and Nevin (1981) define commitment to export as a desire to have a commitment to resources so that the aspirations of the company toward external markets can materialise. Taking into account the already mentioned impact of executive commitment on EP, this behaviour would lead to a higher EP (Makrini and Chaibi, 2015;Sousa et al, 2008). Thus, given the unique characteristics of SMEs involved in international activities, the following hypothesis is theoretically possible:…”

“…Thus, the present article seeks to identify the way in which IO and EC affected the Brazilian EP of SMEs. No previous study has tried to integrate IO and EC to explain EP (Madsen and Moen, 2017;Makrini and Chaibi, 2015), but there are studies that use these constructs to form theoretical frameworks isolated from the internationalisation of SMEs in more developed countries (Andersson and Florén, 2011;Lages and Montgomery, 2004;Moen et al, 2016). At the same time, there is a clear gap in the literature regarding SMEs in emerging markets such as the Brazilian market (Knight and Liesch, 2016;Paul et al, 2017;Rocha et al, 2012).…”

“…The deployment of financial and human resources thus enables companies to be more efficient. As such, export commitment has been shown to be one of the main determinants of export performance (Cavusgil and Zou, 1994; Lages and Montgomery, 2004; Lages et al, 2008; Makrini and Chaibi, 2014). Because export commitment leads managers to be more focused in the export activity and to deploy more effectively resources, it is expected to enhance export performance.…”
