Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to examine the managerial determinants of the export success of Moroccan small and medium enterprises (SMEs) based on resource-based view (RBV) of a firm. Design/methodology/approach – The quantitative design was employed involving a questionnaire completed by 100 managers of Moroccan SMEs. Multiple regression analyses were carried out to confirm or reject eight hypotheses. Findings – It was found that management export commitment and management customer orientation are the main managerial factors in the export success of Moroccan SMEs. Research limitations/implications – The study was limited to one context, and it followed a cross-sectional approach. Export success was measured by only subjective method with Likert scale. The study suggests that further investigations can be made to incorporate other factors affecting export success. Practical implications – The results offer insights into the practices of Moroccan exporting SMEs and recommendations for policy makers as well as an indication for further research. The research can also be used in teaching. Originality/value – First, the tested model is one of few that consider developing country contexts. Second, this research can serve as a guide for future researchers who intend to study export success in other developing countries, particularly in Maghreb regions where there is a gross dearth of research. Therefore, the study is of significant value to practitioners and scholars alike.
Le déficit commercial du Maroc s’est aggravé ces dix dernières années. Il s’élève actuellement à 42,3 milliards de dirhams. L’objectif de cette étude est de montrer que les performances à l’export des PME marocaines ne dépendent pas uniquement des dotations factorielles du pays, mais principalement des pratiques managériales de leurs dirigeants. Le Maroc est en effet un cas illustratif d’un pays en développement où les déterminants managériaux semblent impacter fortement les performances à l’export des PME. En se basant sur une étude qualimétrique, nous analysons cette relation auprès de 100 dirigeants qui ont répondu au questionnaire. Les résultats identifient la stratégie, les pratiques de veille, la communication interne, les compétences internationales et l’engagement à l’export des dirigeants comme les déterminants statistiquement significatifs de la compétitivité et la performance à l’export. Cette recherche a des implications intéressantes pour les dirigeants, les politiques publiques et la recherche académique. L’étude peut également être mise à la disposition du programme d’enseignement supérieur marocain.

This article reviews the conceptual, methodological, and empirical insights gained from a systematic analysis of 65 studies conducted on this subject. Undoubtedly, this stream of research has enhanced understanding of the importance of management commitment in affecting exporting activities. However, conceptually, there is still a lack of integral theoretical framework. Methodologically, limitations are identified concerning sampling designs, fieldwork procedures, and analytical methods. Empirically, hypothesized associations between export commitment and export performance lead to conflicting findings. After a presentation of meta-analysis techniques used and articles compiled, our paper provides an original investigation of this issue by implementing three meta-analyses to examine the relationship between commitment to export and export performance. The meta-analysis, more relevant than simple literature surveys, generally leads to the conclusion that there is a significant positive relationship between export commitment and export performance. Moreover, our findings suggest directions for future research in the field.</p>
